B ush’s com m ents on the sex scandal were his first on the m atter since M arch, when he said he w as co n fid e n t the ch u rch w ould “clean up its business.” He backed em battled Cardinal Bernard Law o f Boston, w ho has becom e a lightening rod for criti cism since. “I respect him a lot,” Bush said in M arch, shortly after Law gave prosecutors the nam es o f at least 80 priests accused o f sexually abusing children. Bush gave the pope a hand- painted silver m edallion o f the M adonna and the pope gave Bush a pink coral statue o f the M a donna and child. Susan C astillo, a Democratic state senator from Eugene and the only Hispanic in Legislature, recently won the election to becom e the next superintendent o f public instruction. At the polls, Castillo beat out her two opponents: State School Superintendent Stan Bunn and Rob Kremer. She earned 55 percent o f the vote in the three-w ay race. C astillo is an advocate for the state’s 1991 school reform program, which established strict academic- standards and statewide testing to make sure students are m astering skills. She also plans to lobby fellow lawm akers for more school money through the national tobacco settlement, and to restructure O regon’s tax system to develop m ore stable financial support for schools. Latino Scholarship and Youth Sponsors Needed The annual Latino Youth Summit, sponsored by the O r egon Commission on Hispanic Affairs, will be held July 2 4 -2 6 at the T ilik u m C e n te r in N e w b e rg , O re g o n .
