Eric Doak hit a game-tying 3- pointer with five seconds left in regulation, then made eight free throws in the final minute o f over time to hand No. 6 Tigard the Class 4A state championship Sat urday with a 69-59 victory over No. 4 Jesuit. “All I was thinking was ‘I’ve got to knock this down,” ' Doak said o f his tying 3. “This whole team has shown unbelievable heart after a lot o f people ques tioned us coming into this tourna ment.” Ryan Gabel led Tigard (24-2), which won its second state title, with 21 points and seven rebounds before fouling out late in over time. Scott Dougherty, had 31 points, including four 3s, to lead Jesuit(22-6). Neither team enjoyed more than a four-point advantage in the sec ond half, which featured four lead changes. The last came when Je suit reeled o ff six unanswered points to take a 50-46 lead with 2:09 left in regulation. Jesuit, which hit 63 percent o f its shots in the first half but only 47 percent in the second half, had trouble connecting from the field in OT and was forced to foul in order to keep the game close. Doak responded by scoring his team 's last eight points from the free throw line, finishing with 14 points. The Tigers also got 15 p o in ts from c e n te r Tom m y Magnuson on 6-of-9 shooting. In other tournament results, Beaverton claimed Third Place with a 59-39 win over Westview, Grants Pass earned Fourth Place witha63-55 victory overChurchill and Benson upset Jefferson, 67- 52, giving the Techmen a Fifth Place finish. Blazers Make Drive Toward Playoffs Portland’s own “Mighty Mouse” Damon Stoudamire takes care of the offense in route to a Blazer victory against New Jersey Friday at the Rose Garden. Stoudamire's performance is a big factor in the Portland Trail Blazers' late season resurgence as an NBA contender. W illiam s, already accused o f m anslaughter, was charged M on day with hindering apprehension, conspiracy to obstruct the adm in istration o f law, w itness tam per ing and two counts o f tam pering with evidence, Hunterdon County authorities said. Prosecutors have said W illiam s, 34, was handling a gun recklessly when 55-year-old Costas Christofi was shot in W illiam s’ bedroom on Feb. 14. A w itness told Sports Illustrated m agazine that W illiam s tried to put the victim ’s palm and fingerprints on the shotgun, then disposed o f his own bloody clothes before po lice arrived. The m agazine did not identify the witness. W illiam s’ brother reported the shooting to authorities as a su i cide. Jayson Williams Oregon Seeded No. 2 in Midwest Team opens NCAA tourney Thursday in Sacramento (AP) - Two years ago, the Oregon Ducks sat stone-faced as the NCAA tournam ent selec tion show handed them a piece o f coal as their March M adness gift: a No. 7 seed and a trip to Buffalo, N.Y. On Sunday, the D ucks’ for tunes were vastly different. The selection com m ittee rew arded Oregon for w inning their first Pac-10 regular-season title by making the Ducks a No. 2 seed. The com m ittee also did the Ducks (23-8) a favor by keeping them close to hom e for the first two rounds. O regon will open play in the M idwest Region in Sacramento, Calif., against 15th- seeded M ontana on Thursday. “They recognized this is one o f the toughest conferences in the country and the fact we con trolled our destiny down the stretch,” Oregon coach Ernie K ent said. “The biggest thing, this is a chance to get o ff to a great start and deal with a very m anageable travel situation b e cause we are staying in the same tim ezone. Oregon went 14-4 in the Pac- 10, claim ing its first outright league title since the 1938-39, when the “Tall Firs” went on to win the inaugural NCAA tour nament. The Ducks had hoped to eam one o f the four top seeds in this year’s NCAA by winning the Pac- 10 tournament, which returned after a 12-year absence.
