No. 4 Jesuit.
“All I was thinking was ‘I’ve

team 's last eight points from the
free throw line, finishing with 14
points. The Tigers also got 15

Oregon Seeded No. 2 in Midwest
Team opens NCAA tourney Thursday in Sacramento
(AP) - Two years ago, the
Oregon Ducks sat stone-faced
as the NCAA tournam ent selec
tion show handed them a piece
o f coal as their March M adness
gift: a No. 7 seed and a trip to
Buffalo, N.Y.
On Sunday, the D ucks’ for
tunes were vastly different. The
selection com m ittee rew arded
Oregon for w inning their first
Pac-10 regular-season title by
making the Ducks a No. 2 seed.
The com m ittee also did the
Ducks (23-8) a favor by keeping
them close to hom e for the first
two rounds. O regon will open
play in the M idwest Region in
Sacramento, Calif., against 15th-
seeded M ontana on Thursday.
“They recognized this is one
o f the toughest conferences in
the country and the fact we con
trolled our destiny down the
stretch,” Oregon coach Ernie
K ent said. “The biggest thing,
this is a chance to get o ff to a
great start and deal with a very
m anageable travel situation b e
cause we are staying in the same
tim ezone.
Oregon went 14-4 in the Pac-
10, claim ing its first outright
league title since the 1938-39,
when the “Tall Firs” went on to
win the inaugural NCAA tour
nament.
The Ducks had hoped to eam
one o f the four top seeds in this
year’s NCAA by winning the Pac-
10 tournament, which returned
after a 12-year absence. But Or
egon is lucky to still bea No. 2af)er
losing to Southern California in
the semifinals on Friday.
