Sept. 13, 2001, in Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church in Portland for Mamie Penn, who died Sept. 8 at age 89. Mrs. Penn was bom Mamie Lynch on Aug. 12, 1912, in Portland, Ark. She moved to Portland, Ore., in 1941 and worked in the cafeterias of Good Samaritan Hospital and then of J.J. Newberry, retiring in the early 1960s. In 1931, she married William Penn; he died in 1988. Survivors include her son. Joe; daughter, Margaret Patton; brothers, D.C. Lynch, Johnny Lynch and Leon Sampson; sister, Beazell Howard; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great- great-grandchildren. Her son John died in 1998. Interment in Willamette National Cemetery. Arrangements by Caldwell’s Colonial Chapel. Christine White A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday , Sept. 10, 2001, in Christ Memorial Church of God in Christ for Christine White, who died Sept. 4 at age 87. Mrs. White was bom Christine Sims on Oct. 23, 1913, in Stephens, Ark. She moved to Portland in the early 1950s and was a foster mother. She served on the Mothers Board of the church, and was also an evangelist and missionary. She married Clem White; he died in 1978. Survivors include her daughter, Mattie Allen; stepdaughters, LaDonna White and Yvonne White; stepson, Darrell White; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great- grandchildren. Interment in Skyline Memorial Gardens. Remembrances to the church. Arrangements by Killingsworth Little Chapel of the Chimes. More than 40,000 people take to the streets in downtown Portland Sunday for the Race for the Cure, an annual event raising money to fight breast cancer. This year, the event had many American flags and was dedicated to the victims o f the terrorism attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Josefina H. Alvarado, who died Sept. 3 at age 58. Mrs. Alvarado was bom Josefina Hernandez on Feb. 13, 1943, in Socorro, Texas. A homemaker, she moved in 1980 to Portland. In 1959, she married Luis Alvarado. Survivors include her husband; daughter. Ana Maria; son, Eduardo; mother, Juanita J. Hernandez; brothers. Paul Hernandez, Ramon Hernandez and Michael Hernandez; sisters, Jesse H. Carrasco, Alice H.
