A TLANTA (A P) The Southern Baptists, already suffering from de f e c tio n s because of th e denom ination's conservative posi tions, have lost one o f their best- known members: Jim m yCarter. The form erpresident, w hoseevan- gelical Christian faith figured prom i nently in his 1976 W hite H ouse cam paign, said in a letter m ailed to fellow Baptists that he is cutting ties to the Southern B aptist C onvention after struggling w ith the “ increasingly rigid’’ creed o f the n atio n ’s largest Protestant denom ination. Some o f the gro u p ’s positions, including recent decisions barring w om en pastors and declaring that w ives should “subm it graciously” to their husbands, “violate the basic premises ofm y Christian faith,” Carter wrote. “ I ’ve m ade this decision w ith a great deal o f pain and reluctance,” the 76-year-old C arter told The A sso ciated Press on Friday. “ F orm e, being a Southern Baptist has always been like being an A m eri can. I ju st have n ever thought o f m aking a change. M y father and his father w ere deacons and Sunday Schoolteachers. C arter said in his letter that he and his wife, Rosalynn, will associate with Baptist groups “w ho share such be- liefs as separation o f church and state . . . a free religious press, and equality o fw o m en .” In recent years, the Southern Bap tis t C o n v e n tio n h as b o y c o tte d D isney and issued resolutions op posing hom osexuality. M erritt said his group isn ’t getting m ore conser vative; A m erican society is getting more liberal. “A lot o f people say it’s society that’s too loose. W e’ re w illing to take a stand even if it’s not very popular,” he said. H e said he has not seen any "m ass exodus” from the faith. H ow ever, more m oderate Baptist organizations have grow n as congre gations leave the Southern Baptists. The A tlanta-basedC ooperative Bap tis t F e llo w s h ip n o w h as 1,800 churches after only a decade in exist ence. O n W ednesday, the Seventh & James Baptist Church in Waco, Texas, voted to sever ties to the Southern Baptists. “As the resolutions have been m ore and m ore exclusionary, w e’ve been em barrassed to be asso ciated w ith the convention,” said the Rev. R aym ond Bailey. Bailey said C arter’s decision to leave m ay encourage som e m oderate Southern Baptists to follow. “ H e’s a wonderful model ofC hris- tian servanthood on an international level, and certainly his positions have an effect," he said.
