including recent decisions barring

premises ofm y Christian faith,” Carter
wrote.
“ I ’ve m ade this decision w ith a
great deal o f pain and reluctance,”
the 76-year-old C arter told The A sso

“ F orm e, being a Southern Baptist

C arter w ill rem ain a deacon at

w here he has served as a Sunday
school teacher since he w as 18. Last
month, at C arter’s urging, M aranatha
voted to divert h alf its m ission contri

C arter said in his letter that he and
his wife, Rosalynn, will associate with

In recent years, the Southern Bap

his group isn ’t getting m ore conser

“A lot o f people say it’s society
that’s too loose. W e’ re w illing to take
a stand even if it’s not very popular,”
he said. H e said he has not seen any
"m ass exodus” from the faith.

Rev. R aym ond Bailey.
Bailey said C arter’s decision to
leave m ay encourage som e m oderate
Southern Baptists to follow.
“ H e’s a wonderful model ofC hris-
