I'he recipients o f the $1,000 lolarships were Vanessa Chavez, a Gandanilla, Alonso Melendez, Cantores in Ecclesia to Perform Homecoming The boys, girls and adults of G regorian chant and sacred po lyphony from all periods on Sunday, November 12, in St. Patrick’s Church, Northwest 19lh & Raleigh in Portland, at7:30p.m. The program will include music that was recently performed in sev eral churches in Chicago during the first week ofNovember. Featured on the program w ill be the M issa 'Laetatus sum ' for 12 voices (or three choirs) by Spanish Renaissance com poser Tomás Luis de Victoria. This mass was originally composed w hen V ictoria w as M aestro de Cappella ofthe Collegius Germanicum in Rome. Other music will include sections o f Herbert Howell’s Re quiem; Maurice Duruflé’s Ubi caritas; A nton B ru c k n e r’s Os ju s ti meditabitur; settings o f the Ave Maria by Gabriel Faure, Robert Parsons, Casals’s Nigra sum; and Samuel W esley’s Si iniquitates. All ofthis music was performed in Chicago at the invitation o f His Emi nence, FrancisCardinal George, Arch bishop o f Chicago. Tickets will be available on the day o f the concert at thedoorofSt. Patrick’s: $10 general admission: $8 seniors and children. Cantores in Ecclesia, under the direction o f Dean Applegate, is an ensemble o f boys, girls and adults who specialize in Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony from all peri ods. The choir has been featured in BBC Magazine and has performed throughout Europe, Mexico and the western United States. In 1997 the choir was awarded three gold medals in the International Palestrina Com petition in Rome. T o d ay , the D ays o f the Dead are c e le b ra ted each year on Nov. 1 and 2. On these days, it is be- lieved the dead com e from the beyond to visit w ith the living. Special foods are prepared, breads are baked, and altars to the d ead and c e m e ta rie s are cleaned and decorated w ith flow ers. The souls o f the dead are said to return from the a fte r-life, to v isit the living, w here they consum e the food and drink left for them. The living receive the dead with merrim ent, m usic,a nd all the things they enjoyed w hile living. The Dia de los m uertos F esti val runs from Oct. 27 - N ov. 11. O pening night is Friday, O ct. 27 at 8 p.m ., tickets are $12.
