T he H ot Shot T ap D ancers o f northeast Portland have earned a grant from N ike, Inc. R andy M assey, the m anager and father o f the group, said the funds w ill help the H ot Shots pay som e everyday expenses such as new tap shoes, dance w ear, and m ore dance and vocal training. T his fall, the m em bers w ill also study guitar, drum s and trum pet. T he Hot Shot Tap D ancers are three brothers and a sister: Carl, 16; B ethany, 14; L loyd, 13; and Kyle, 9. T hey began perform ing nine years ago at the P ortland Satur day M arket. C urrently, their sum m ers in volve travel around O regon and W ashington, entertaining at n u m erous county fairs, conventions and com m unity events. Seventy-seven percent passed the writing test, up 5 percent from 1999, while 45 percent passed the math prob lem-solving test, down 5 percent.
