U nder the direction o f LaV on V ann founder and director o f Successful C hoices, the w eek included daily w orkouts at Irving Park then a two- day to urnam ent at the S alvation Army. T he clinic gave the young m en the opportunity to w ork on their skills as w ell as being turned on to positive people in the com m unity. Each day different people from the com m unity spoke and shared know ledge with the young men. A very, w ho w orks w ith college and N B A players told the young men that they should use basketball to get free education and open doors o f opportunity. John Phillips spoke about preparation for life and the im portance o f b e in g a b le to p r e s e n t th e m s e lv e s in a p o s itiv e manner. Greater Northwest Summer league had game T here w as a lot o f basketball this sum m er, but none as exciting than the G reater N orthw est Sum m er League. This y ear’s sum m er league featured the top college players in O regon and W a s h in g to n a lo n g w ith g u e s t ap p earan ces from P o rtlan d T rail BlazerDam onStoudam ire. Thegroup o f C o u r ts id e E n te r ta in m e n t consisting o f C anaan C hatm an, Erin C ow en, Pat S trickland and D eray T hridgill, put together a concept o f skill developm ent as w ell as attitude development. Form er college players w ho delivered the m essage o f team play and positive attitudes coached the eight teams. T he level o f play was in ten se w ith p le n ty o f funk and sm ooth basketball entertainm ent. B asketball w as not the only thing taught in this league. M any new friendships w ere m ade as w ell as attitude adjustm ents. The success o f the league proves that w hen positive forces in the com m unity jo in together g reat th in g s can h ap p en for o u r y o u th . T h e G re a te r N o rth w e st Sum m er L eague w ill only get bigger and b etter next year. Jalante M artin added 22 points w ith an assortm ent ofdunks and dazzling m oves. Bruce Jones and R yan C arroll had 23 points apiece for the losing team . Y oung Jerae N elson gave the ov erflo w in g crow ed an aw esom e display in winning the slam- dunk contest.
