T he non-partisan cam paign, called O regon Latino V ote 2000, w as announced in W oodburn at the annual Oregon Latino Basketball Tournam ent sponsored by the Latino Education and Recreation Network. “C hanges in O regon’s population have not been adequately reflected in the make-up o f voters,” said Secretary o f State Bradbury. “ W e need more representatives from the L atino C om m unity to run for public office, and we need to encourage m ore, particularly young Latinos to vote.” T he Oregon Latino V oter R egistration Education Project has set a goal o f registering 5,000 Latino voters by the N ovem ber 7 ,2 0 0 0 election. In 1996, one year after Frank G arcia and A nthony V eliz co-founded the organization, O LV R EP registered 1,000 Latino voters, sponsored several voter education forum s, and coordinated a get-out-the-vote cam paign. “O LV R EP plans to use com m unity events, new spapers, radio, cable television, and the Internet to get the w ord out to Latinos that their vote is their voice,” said Frank Garcia. “ W e are seeking partners to help share this m essage with O reg o n ’s grow ing Latino population.” C urrent coalition m em bers include the O regon Secretary o f State, the Com m ission on H ispanic A ffairs, the O regon State H ispanic Em ployee Netw ork, the Latino Education and Recreation Network (W oodburn), the R ogue V alley H ispanic C ham ber o f C om m erce (M edford), the Latino C oalition (Eugene), the H ispanic Education A dvocacy Resource Team (Portland), and C entro C ultural (W oodburn). T he O regon L atino V ote 2000 cam paign is part o f a national effort led by the Southw est V oter Registration Education Project to increase Latino voter registration to eight million. G alo Pico, presidente d e la Corte Suprem a, en una providencia que se conoció ayer, sindicó penalm ente, sin orden de prisión, al dirigente indígen a A n to n io V argas; al ex presidente de laCorte Suprema, Carlos Solórzano, y a los ex generales Paco M oncayo y Rene Y andún, que eran diputados cuando ocurrió la caída de M ahuad el 21 de enero pasado. V argas, m á xim o d irig en te de la C onfederación de N acionalidades Indígenas (CON AIE), Solórzano y el e n to n c e s m in is tr o d e D e fe n sa , general C arlos M endoza, formaron una fugaz Junta de G obierno que quedó disuelta luego que el m ilitar se retiró del intento. M ahuad fue d e rro ca d o luego que las protestas callejeras de la C onaie recibieran el sorpresivo apoyo de un centenar de oficiales del ejército. El vicepresidente G ustavo N oboa sucedió constitucionalm ente a M ahuad. M oncayo y Y andún, altos dirigentes del partido Izquierda D em ocrática, socialdem ócrata, en sus condiciones de diputados, apoyaron la revuelta, c u a n d o su o b lig a c ió n co m o le g is la d o r e s “ e r a d e f e n d e r el ordenam iento jurídico del país”, dice la providencia.
