Kelly, Bono, Crystal Lewis and The Fam ily Kirk Franklin, Gospo Centric, and Interscope Records announced that they will contribute a total amount o f $2 50,000 to the Burned Churches Fund o f the National Council of the Churches o f Christ in the USA in anticipation ofthe profits from Kirk Franklin’s the Nu Nation Project that was released on September 29, 1998. Highlighting the album is a new song, “Lean On Me, written and produced by Franklin, which features him performing with Mary I. Blige, R. Kelly, Bono, Crystal Lewis, and his group. The Family. “This song will get the message o f the Gospel to those people who have been turned o ff by this type o f message in the past,” states Kirk. "I was raised in the church. It is impor tant that we support the churches and synagogues that have been burned or defaced. I couldn’t help but help. Those churches are part o f The Vornado Brothers Ricky and Reo Vomado recently released a CD on Contemporary gos pel, Mississippi style entitled “ Keep Moving On”. This follows their last record made plus a nationwide tour covering 38 states which has gained them fan recognition in faraway places like Canada and Africa. Their greatest intention is to “spread Gospel all over the world,” explains Reo. Sings on the CD were co-written by die brothers and sung m aunique sty loof tight harmonies done to soothe the broken-hearted and uplift the down trodden. The music was dedicated to their mother, Mennie Varnado and their late father, William Varnado. Raised in Magnolia, Mississippi, they : come from a dynamic musical family consisting o f 27 brothers and sisters. Altogether, theirmusical cred its are impressively long and well- known. Their faith and spiritual up bringing has bonded them through the years and influenced their singing pro foundly. Recognized as a child prodigy. Reo Vomado began singing at the young age o f 3, joined his first group called “Heavenly Echoes” and started tour ing at 9 years old. This has lead to his becoming a strong force in Gospel music. The V orn ad o b ro th e rs have achieved fame on their own and to gether. They ’ ve won numerous awards including “Best Single” in STAR SEARCH, received the “W ho’s Who o f American Music’ ’ award and earned other high honors. While in Portland where they are a Gospel sensation, Myra Girod (an Executive producer) recognized their talents and invested in them. Both brothers are now seeking a record company deal like their sister who signed on recently with Wamer Broth ers. They plan on staging a CD release party in town that would include such musical artists as Snoop Doggy Dog. Jodeci, Heavy D and others. Sadly, however, churches are still being burned. We know o f at least 20 churches at the present moment which are trying to figure out how to rebuild. We will not be able to assist many burned churches and syna gogues due to a lack o f resources.
