It will continue to offer its Master o f Science in Teaching in Environmental Science, as well as its B.A., B.S. and doctoral programs in environm ental sci ences. PSU has already begun accept ing applications and enrolling students in the new m aster’s pro grams, which will begin with up to 25 graduate students. Adm ission requirem ents in clude a science-based bachelor’s degree or equivalent training and evidence o f coursework in biol ogy, chemistry, geology, physics and mathematics. A fa m ily f irs t...A lis h a Moreland o f Portland will be come the first in her family to go to college this fall, an achieve ment that just earned her a $5,000 C o ca-C o la F irs t G e n eratio n Scholarship. Moreland, who re ceived her aw ard from Rick Gillis, northern California divi sion vice president and general manager o f the Coca-Cola Bot tling Company o f California, is now attending Stanford Univer sity. The scholarship program. funded with a $500,000 grant from The Coca-Cola Foundation, is the only one o f its kind in California. It was created to help more students become the first in their family to attend college and will provide nearly 100 scholar ships on 25 college campuses across the state. The scholarships are available through a partnership with Inde pendent Colleges o f Southern California and Independent Col leges o f Northern California, two associations that raise funds and create partnerships that benefit independent colleges and univer sities. This year’s 3K walk will be pre sented by McDonald’s Restaurants of Oregon and SW Washington and the Oregon Lottery. The College Fund/UNCF helps historically Black Colleges to pro vide scholarships to deserving stu dents. The UNCF has been provid ing students with needed money to help with tuition, books and labora tory expenses for over fifty years. Oregon is home to scores of students and alumni of UNCF schools. All of America benefits from an educated workforce and this is an Oregon investm ent for the community’s youth. People can participate individu ally or in teams. Prizes will be awarded to individuals and groups who raise the most money. R esearcher Jason Newsom o f Portland State U n iv ersity ’s Institute on Aging is spearhead ing a study o f how older couples give help to and receive help from one another. “We w ant to determ ine what works and what doesn’t, and then im prove on th at,” says Newsom. “ U ltim ately, our goal is to help couples to live independently in the com m unity as long as they can.” The study, funded by the N a tional Institute on A ging, calls for in terv iew in g 200 couples over the age o f 60 who are m ar ried or living as m arried. “W e’re about a third o f the way th ere,” says New som , “but we need to contact other couples in the Port Eligible couples who p artici pate in the study will receive a small financial incentive (a to tal o f $45). Interview s are ex pected to last one hour or less. M inority elders in particular are encouraged to apply.
