o f Florence G riffith Joyner at 38 m M is­
sion V iejo, Calif.
Just four days shy o f the 1 Oth anniver­
sary o f her first gold m edal at the 1988
Olym pics in Seoul. South Korea, G riffith
Joyner passed away, apparently in her sleep.
A m arketing rep resen tativ e for the
sprinter said the cause o f death was a heart
seizure but provided n o o th e r specifics. An
autopsy w as perform ed M onday, but no
cause o f death was announced. D epending
on tests conducted, official w ord could
take weeks.
G riffith Joyner’s husband. Al Joyner,
the 1984 O lym pic triple-jum p cham pion,
called 911 at 6:30 a m. PT M onday. A c­
cording to Lt. Hector Rivera o f the O range
County S heifF s D epartm ent, a routine in­
vestigation revealed no evidence o f foul
play. " S h e apparently died o f natural
causes,” Rivera said.
