The Church had indicated a policy ofnot recruiting Blacks because, the Church main- tained, Blacks do not listen to clu- sical music and thus could be pre- sumed not to possess "classical musac expertise." The Church appealed and has won. In exchan1e for eight years of protected use of billion dollars worth of public airwaves, all that the FCC'• EEO rule required was that broadcasters: • Notify sources of minority can- didates, such as colleges and uni- venities, when jobs become avail- able. • Not discriminate against per- son of any race. The FCC's rule did not include: • Quotas. • Timetables. • Hiring aoals. If this is too much for the court, it sets an extremely dangerous pre- cedent for all affirmative action programs. And it places all of the civil rights advances of the laat I 00 years in this country squarely in the right wing's crosshain. The 13th, 14th, and 15th amend- ments, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the 1965 Voting Rights Act en- abled us to grow beyond slavery, institutional discrimination and American apartheid. The FCC's EEO policies translated these civil righta goals into the information age. This ruling is potentially as dan- gerous as the 1896 ruling in Pleasy v. Ferguson. Rev. Jackson has called on the Clinton Administration, the Justice Department, and the FCC to act swiftly to ask the full D.C. Cir- cuit to overturn this horrible deci- sion. The Church at its worse follows the tradition of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa and its sup- port of apartheid. Lutherans of good conscience must show their indigna- tion and rise up. LT'he 'Home going f>f :Johnie Sharpe 'Williams, Sr. December JO, 1914-Aprll I .J, 1998 Johnie Sharpe Williams. Sr. was born on December 30, 1914 in Belzoni, Missiuippi, the second sonoCPauline and John S. Williams. In 1938 he fell head over heels in love and married his lovely wife, Mozell. They lived in Columbus and Belzoni, Mississippi. They had two children, Johnny Sha,pc and Nathalec Louise, In 1943 he decided "no more back door" assignments, so off he moved to Portland, Oregon lo work as a painter for the Defense Department at the Swan Island shipyards. When he staned his own business as a painter in Oregon, he bought a few tools and a truck which the neighbors calledthe"BlackBox"andaskedhim to move it frequently from in front of their homes. Later he owned a family- run Pittsburgh Paint Store on Broad- way and Williams Avenue, but only for a short while, because his hwnan- istic, helpful manner of assisting 'his' people by cashing checks for Safeway hampered this adventure. Johnie "never fell from a ladder", until he went to work for the county at age 60. He provided jobs for all ethnic and racial poups, offered bis professional servicesandadviceforover40+yean in the Portland Community. He con- tinued this profession until the ripe ole age of 75, even taking classes in up- holsterina at Ponland Community College in his 70's. Johnie loved his family- wife, chil- dren, grands and great grands, as well as his friends. He was often observed doing his "honey-dew" tasks, taking his family on Sunday drives to fairs, carnivals, school activities and across the county almostyqrly and expected his children to do well in school, so he helped with homework, too. He suffered a stroke in 1997 and he did not know how to accept visitors or sympathy well, but his pride and stamina pulled him through. In 1998 he suffered another major stroke. He will be missed for his magnifi- cent work, his analytical mind and his quiet humanism, but we know it is God's will that he share his energy with the univme. The Survivors; Wife: L.
