APRIL 29, 1998 let The Home Court Matters BLAZERS COMPLAIN ABOUT OFFICIATING Bv BOB BAUM One loss from being swept from the playoffs by the Los Angeles Lakers, the Portland Trail Blazers are hoping the foul calls are a bit more balanced now that they’re playing at home. I The Lakers shot 31 more free throws than the Blazers in Sunday’s Cíame 2 at the Great Western Fo rum. As the series shifts to Portland forTuesday night’sG am e3, coach Mike Dunleavy told the emotional Blazers they are reaping what they have sewn through the season. “What Mike told us is all the things w e’ve done throughout the season in terms o f negative public ity and yelling at referees is all com ing back on u s,” D am on Stoudamire said. “But at the same time w e’ve got to fight through it. We ve got to focus in on the game and not on the referees.” The Lakers were 34-for-52 from the free throw line in their 108-99 victory over the Blazers Sunday. Portland was 17-for-21. “Some of it was aggressiveness and some o f it was ridiculous,” Isaiah Rider said. “We have a play where Sabas (Arvydas Sabonis), myself and Rasheed (W allace) get W hy w ould a 43-year-old man who has won tw o British O pens, earned m ore money than anyone in the history o f g o lf and ow ns sev eral thriving businesses want to put in the grueling work to return to com petition from surgery? W ith Norman the answ er is quite sim ple. Pride. Few athletes are m otivated as much by pride as Norman. It’s why h e ’s been able to bounce back so often. “ I think there are still m ajors in m e,” N orm an said by telephone from his Hobe Sound, Fla., home. “T here is still a lot on my plate I w ould like to ach iev e.” It w ould b e a sham e ifN o rm a n ’s career ended like this. And there is slapped in the arm. Then we come down and slap them in the arm, they go to the line.” Dunleavy, who shared the lead with Utah s Jerry Sloan for most technicals in the regular season, used the word "am azing” to describe the free throw discrepancy. He said his belief that the Blazers were victims o f bad calls were backed up by re marks he heard from commentators when he watched the videotape o f N BC’s telecast o f the game. “ I come back and I watch the film and 1 see five or seven replays where I’ve got the guys on NBC saying ’Those aren’t fouls.’ ‘T hat’s not a foul.’ ‘I d on’t think that was a touch.’ ‘That’s pretty cheap.’ I don’t have to say anything,” Dunleavy said. "It’s being said on national TV by people who are more objective than I cer tainly would be, so I hope it changes back.” Shaquille O ’Neal sees the Blaz e rs’ frustration mounting. ‘ ‘They don ’ t th ink they ’re getting any calls, hesaid,“sothey’llbeextrapumped up. We’ll just have to be ready for that.” Portland is equally frustrated try ing to defend O ’Neal. The Blazers have double- and triple-teamed the big center, only to have him toss it out to a teammate for an open jumper. s till PIL STANDINGS SPORTS STANDINGS 1998 SPRING STANDINGS Madison Roosevelt Grant Cleveland Lincoln Franklin Wilson Benson Marshall Jefferson 10 0 8 2 7 3 6 4 6 4 4 6 4 6 3 7 2 8 0 10 MENS TENNIS W 6 7 7 5 5 3 3 Lincoln Grant Wilson Benson Roosevelt Cleveland Franklin M,B M,R,F M,R,W,G G,C,M,R C,C,R,l,W,M G.L.M.M.JM.R L 0 1 2 2 3 5 5 To L G.L W.G W.L.G R.G.W.B.L G.C.B.R.W Marshall Madison Jefferson 2 1 0 7 7 7 MENS TRACK Benson Franklin Cleveland Grant Wilson Lincoln Madison Marshall Roosevelt Jefferson W J, 4 0 0 MENS GOLF Franklin Cleveland Lincoln Wilson Grant Benson Madison Roosevelt Marshall Jefferson 4 3 3 2 1 1 1 2 0 3 3 3 3 4 W k 7 0 0 1 1 1 4 4 4 3 3 2 2 0 0 I 1 1 3 4 4 5 5 6 I B\ ROXY ROXBOROUGH DAVID SCOTT and D oes the hom e co urt m a tte r in the NBA'.’ You bet.
