A J B radford Buildings Of Portland’s African American History The Bosco-Milligan Foundation is proud to present its expanded publication “Cornerstones of Com munity: The Buildings of Portland’s African American History’’ In a fo rum on Saturday, February 28th, at the Vancouver Avenue First Bap tist Church. This program is the result of a community-based con tinuing effort to identify and docu ment buildings in Portland neigh borhoods associated with African American individuals, institutions and events. The revised publication (a substantial expansion of the foundation’s November, 1995 pub lic a tio n ) te lls the h isto ry of Portland’s African American com munity in the context of the still standing buildings where people lived, shopped, went to church, and held meetings over time - up to the early 1970s. The community forum will honor the participants, discuss the research efforts and the many “re discover ies” of building histories, along with a slide presentation. The forum will begin at 10:00 am and end at 11:45 am. A reception will follow the fo rum where the publication will be available. The Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall is accessible for anyone with mobil ity difficulties. There is no charge for the event but pre-registration is requested to help plan handouts and refreshments. Nearly 3000 volunteer hours have been dedicated by dozens of people who support our African American Community history. The research project team includes Otto and Verdell Rutherford, Darrell Millner, McKinley Burt, Kimberly Moreland, Carl Abbott and Kristen Stallman. The Community History Committee, Pauline Bradford, Ed Caldwell, Virginia Garnett, Willie Ranson, Laurel Lyon and Ann F ulton, w orked to review the project’s progress, and identified people whocould fill in many chap ters o f history. Harold Gaskin, Willie Mae Hart, Harrie Belle Paris, AlethaChavis, Alice Whitney, and Valerie Campbell have also donated dozens of hours. We are indebted to the many individuals who have taken the time to share their memories of many decades!
