Dr. King re quired us to have, "Tough Minds, Tender Hearts.” They followed the dictates o f their conscience to be more important than thedictatesof government. Both men acted out o f civil disobedience, a campaign inspired by the American writer, Thoreau. Like an ascetic. Gandhi meditated on the truths o f Master Yogananda: Cleanse the subconscious and plug the leaky holes in the bucket o f your awareness so that it can be tilled with Divine energy. As Gandhi meditated. M artin Luther King prayed for change. In the stilling o f their mind, Truth tillered through to possess their heart. Both men had a tremendous capacity for love. It was a love for God first and then humankinu. In being clear channels for Divine love (Agape), they acted for the good o f the whole. His ideas o f love resonated with his nonviolent political goals A c c o rd in g to M a rtin L uth er King,"Agape means nothing senti mental or basically affectionate; it means understanding, redeeming good w ill for all men, an overflowing love which seeks nothing in return. It is the love o f God working in the lives o f men." Dr King and Gandhi underwent a personal transformation. They had to align their mind with heart to re ceive Power. It is not a Power that preserves out o f selfishness. This was spiritual conviction used as a p o liti cal force Gandhi understood it as Satyagraha (spiritual truth used as a political tool). The Onandaga tribe makes al I their major decisions with seven future generations in mind. M artin Luther King and Gandhi had to act out of clarity, pure spiritual conviction and divine love which affected m illions o f people and generations to follow. Their calling was for a higher ser- vice It is a kind o f service no longer to the sell but to something greater, something outside themselves. We don’ t have a movement today resurrecting our conscience to affect profound change. That is our down fall. Acollectiveconscience inspired by Divine Love has the power to transform the world. The person with conscience must be w illin g to risk being considered a whiner by polite society. The person with conscience has a responsibility to be a thorn in the side o f a compla cent status quo The person w ith con science holds up a m irror to the world, which must include himself. The corner has been occupied tor the past 25 years by St. Vincent dePaul Rehabilitation Service, a not- for-profit corporation that provides job skills training and employment to people with disabilities. T o ac commodate growth. St. Vincent s plans a major remodel o f its 40.000 square foot headquarters. The orga nization is relying on a $70.000 grant from PDC to help cover the costs of site and streetscape improvements that w ill create a more pedestrian- friendly environment for a building that now has a fortress-1 ike appear ance. The Portland Development Com mission voted at its December IS meeting on a resolution to support the project with $70.(MX) in tax incre ment funding from the M L K Jr BI vd. Commercial Site Development Pro gram. "The Alberta Street and M L K Jr B lvd intersection is a key com ponent of the e ffo rt to advance c o m m e rc ia l r e v ita liz a tio n and beautification o f the area,'’ says F e licia Trader. It is a business we want to support in this neighborhood." “Reverend Martin Luther King was a wise leader fo r where our society was at the tune. We are headed fo r equal status, with any kind o f movement, there wdl be resistance. Look at all socio-economic indicators and work on ways to balance them. Look at places where there is error and come together in places where there needs to be repair.
