Page B8 u ^îoxtlanô G b (©bseruer M etro Receives First Open Spaces Land Donation The Metro Council has re ceived a donation of a 2 .1-acre parcel of land in Northeast Port land Donated by Edmund Hayes Jr. at the urging of The Trust for Public Land, the open space will be added to the inventory of natu ral area lands Metro has been acquiring throughout the region since the 1995 passage of the open spaces, parks and streams bond measure. The donated land is located in an industrial area within the Co lum bia S lough S ystem at Whitaker Ponds, a relatively un developed open space near Co lumbia Boulevard and Northeast 47th Avenue. The natural area contains two ponds, wetlands. open meadows and riparian for ests in various stages of restora tion. With the donation, the en tire western pond is now in pub lic ownership. “I applaud Mr. Hayes’ dona tion to the greenspaces program,” said Metro Councilor Ed Wash ington, whose district includes the land. "He is truly a person committed to this region, and I appreciate his passion." W orking c o o p e ra tiv e ly , Metro, the City of Portland and M ultnom ah County have ac quired five additional parcels of land (11.7 acres) at W hitaker Ponds. A portion of the donated par cel w ill be the site o f a “bioswale,” a passive storm wa ter treatment facility, which will remove storm water pollutants currently entering the western pond. This project is a joint ef fort by the city of Portland’s Bureau of Environmental Ser vices and Metro. The bioswale will be constructed in 1998. "W hitaker Ponds is natural area haven in an urban area,” said Washington. "The public will surely ben efit from Mr. Hayes’ donation.” Public access to the Whitaker Ponds natural area will be devel oped as funds become available.
