know " when Rick Braun, acclaimed
c o n te m p o ra ry ja z z tru m p e te r,
llugelhorm st, com poser and p ro ­
ducer. was named "A rtis t o f the Y ear"
at smooth jazz/adult alternative ra­
dio by trade magazine G avin. A fte r
all. the talented Braun had delivered
the # I smooth jazz album o f the year
with Beat Street, a recording that
commanded the top slot at that fo r­
mal lor a record breaking I A weeks
Beat Street's reign at radio had far
surpassed that o f anv other album in
the history o f the adult alternative
formal (including Kenny G 's duo
Tones and Dave K o z ’ s Lucky Man).
And as the icing on the cake, the
Pennsylvania-born trum peter had
also produced or played on num er­
ous other lop smooth jazz record­
ings. in c lu d in g label mate J e ff
G olub's avenue Blue and Boney
James' Seduction.
Rick Braun's amazing impact at
radio began in 1994. when he success-
lu lly challenged sazophone players'
dominance ol smooth jazz radio w ith
Ins Bluemoon album. N ight W alk
Night Walk catapulted to the top ol the
charts, and helped Braun earn his first
judges and juries — and usually
w o n . W ith the e x c e p tio n o f
Muhammad A l l . he is arguably the
most famous man in boxing today.
His name is Don K ing.
The form er numbers runner and
convicted felon, who served tim e
in prison for manslaughter, rose
from life on the C leveland streets
to become the w o rld 's most suc­
cessful — and v ilifie d — boxing
prom oter In his c lim b up the lad­
der. King charmed, intimidated and
outsm arted most everyone, all
w hile wrapping h im se lf in the lib ­
erties and protections o f the red,
white and blue, often w h ile talking
about black and w hite, and always
counting the green.
