T he h a lf-h o u r pro g ram airs Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:00PM (ET), beginning April 3. It is re peated Fridays at 2:00A M (ET). April editions o f The Scott Re port will explore topics such as “ A frican-A m ericans D esigns for the H om e,” focusing on ex press ing o n e 's culture in the hom e en vironm ent; “ From the Roots U p,” looking at the fascination with hair in the A frican-A m erican com m unity; and “ W anted! L oving Parents,” exploring the adoption o f children, especially those with special needs. A nchor o f the w eekly series is veteran journalist and form er net work correspondent, Jim Scott, who is jo in e d by a sta ff o f exp eri enced journalists from th ro u g h out the country. A native o f Pitts burgh, Mr. Scott has had a distin guished 26-year career in broad cast journalism in such d.qerse m arkets as Ft. W ayne, Indiana, Pittsburgh, Boston, W ashington, D.C. and Los Angeles. The Scott Report is the culm ina tion o f Mr. Scott’s long-tim e desire to present a fair and balanced week ly report about and to the African- American community. The program also features hard hitting com m entary by U nited Church o f Christ pastor and form er journalist, the Rev. Dr. Susan K. Smith. Prior to answering the call to the ministry in 1986, Dr. Smith worked for ten years as ajoum alist, covering politics and w riting po litical analysis. She earned the M aster o f D ivin ity degree at Yale Divinity School and was the first A frican-A m eri can woman to be elected president o f the student body. Dr. Smith re ceived the Doctor o f M inistry de gree at United Theological Sem i nary, Dayton, Ohio, and is cur rently pastor o f A dvent U nited Church o f C hrist in C olum bus, Ohio. A Separate Cinema Movie Posters Reflecting African-American Cinematic History A new exhibition, opening April 4 at the FORBES M agazine G aller ies, d o c u m e n ts the little -k n o w n h iso ty ro f A frican-A m ericans in five decades o f A m erican m ovies. “A S eparate Cinem a: M ovie Post ers R eflecting A frican -A m erican C inem atic H istory,” opens April 4 and runs thro u g h M ay 3 at the FORBES M agazine G alleries. The exhibit coincides with the article “ The Art o f Black C inem a," ap p ear ing in the S pring 1997 issue o f A m erican L egacy , th e q u a rte rly m a g a z in e c e le b r a tin g A fr ic a n - A m erican history and culture. "A Separate C inem a” will feature posters from films m ade by the little- know n A frican-A m erican m otion picture industry that existed in the early part o f this century. A lso in cluded will be posters from m ajor studio films that w ere specifically created to target A frican-A m erican viewers. The exhibition is drawn from the archive o f collector John Kisch, one o f th e nation's leading collectors o f A frican-A m erican m ovie m em ora bilia. Films represented will include, “The Flying A ce,” "Black G old,” and “The Flaming Crisis.” silent features produced by black-ow ned production com panies in the 1920s; 1930’s es capist movies, “G ang Sm ashers" and “Girl from Chicago," Depression-era films shown in segregated theaters; 1930’s black-cast Westerns, “ I larlem Rides the Range,” and “The Bronze Buckaroo,” m ade by small, all-white production com panies for black audi ences; 1940’s “Son o f Ingagi,” the firstall-black-cast “talkie” horror film; and 1940’s and 1950's big-studio m u sica ls “ S to rm y W e ath er” and Oregon Children’s Theatre Sum m er ’97 Acting Class Workshops Portland, OR - Oregon ( hihlren ’v Theatre today announced that it will hold summer acting workshops at the Portland center for the Performing Arts/H inningstad Theatre. One- and two-week performance workshops for children ages 5-16 will begin July 7 and run through August 22. All workshops culminate in a performance for family and friends. Workshops include: Velveteen Rab bit; The Wizard of Oz; Matilda Curious George; Winnie-the-Pooh Pinocchio; The Hobbit James A the Giant Peach; Dracula Rridge to Terabith ia (Musical) Also offered will be On-Camera Acting, a workshop with Dennis Sullivan of Cusick's Talent Agency. On-Camera Acting is offered to students with previous performance or theatre class experience who are interested in developing audition and performance skills for the television and f ilm industry. By 1980, he had gathered enough m aterials to start the S eparate C inem a A rchive, one o f th e largest private collections o f A frican-A m erican film m em orabilia in the w orld, today consisting o f alm ost seventy years o f material.
