This y e a r’s K aram u Ya Im ani (Feast o f Faith) K w anzaa celeb ra tion will be held on W ednesday, Jan uary I. 1997 at K ennedy King C o l lege. 68(X) S W entw orth. The ce le bration will begin at noon. It is estim ated that more than 18 million A frican-A m ericans partici pate in som e sort o f K w anzaa event In the wake o f the rising A frican- A merican com m unity begins p repar ing for the K w anzaa season. In order lor this to occur parents, teachers, principals, m inisters, business peo ple and com m unity activists m ust begin preparation imm ediately. The first question that should be asked in preparation for the K w anzaa season is, what is K w anzaa and why is it as im portant for A frican-A m er ican people? In the 1960s, the Black Pow er explosion shook up A m erica and suc cessfully began the dism antling o f the legal system o f racial segregation in the south H ow ever many blacks felt there was adeeper m eaning to the ideas o f f reedom , justice, and eq u al ity that had not been advocated by Civil Rights M ovem ent. The call for Black Power by C ongressm an A dam Clayton Powell. K w am e Ture (a.k.a. Stokely C arm ichael), and others gave a new im petus for the Black L ibera tion M ovem ent in America. W hen the sm oke cleared from the W alts rebellion in 1965, an org an i zation em erged in the Los Angeles, C alifornia area called "U S ”. The concept o f K w anzaa strikes at the root o f the A frican C entered M ovem ent in this country. It pro vides a forum for us as a people to define ourselves in the context of their own experience.
