Donna Wyant Howell o f Wash ington, DC, compiler o f the series o f books entitled I Was A Slave, has cameo audio roles w ithin the upcom ing PBS Special "Slavery’ s Buried Past” prem iering nationw ide on Wednesday, December 18. 1996 at 8:00 p.m. (check local listings). The program is hosted by B ill Kurtis o f K urtis Productions, Ltd. as part o f the Peabody Award-winning series named “ The New Explorers” . The program examines the dis covery o f a slave graveyard that con tained 427 bodies in New York City and the subsequent findings. It in cludes information about other exca vations that have unearthed articles used by slaves, such as drilled spoon handles (to attract good spirits) and a charm in the image o f a fist. In keeping with the theme o f pro viding additional pieces to the un- derstandingof African American his- tory, the show’s producers have in cluded segments from the first four books o f the I Was A {slave book collection. These books are written entirely in the words o f the former slaves, thousands o f whom dictated their full life stories in the 1930's. In addition to doing research for narra tives for program, Donna also does voiceovers w ithin the program and speaks in dialect, using the actual words o f several former slaves. The program also includes some o f the photographs o f the ex-slaves who tell their life stories in the books.
