I. ..Portland Adventist Com munity Services (PACS) gave away more than $ 184,000 worth o f food in 1994? We served over 24,000 peo ple last year, providing emergency food, clothing and medical care. 2 .... PACS is considered among the top five community' service agen- cies in the Portland area by the O re gon Food Bank? And that PACS is the only community service agency in Portland to offer all services free o f charge? 3. ...PACS has a new truck driv er? Lyndon Cook is learning the routes and we are enjoying having him as part o f our team. 4. ...The Family Health Clinic has a new coordinator? Joan Hull is graciously donating her valuable time 20 hours week until the position can be funded. 5. ...The Family Health Clinic had over 1,300 patient visits last year? These visits were made possible by an all volunteer staff o f doctors and nurses. We need more help! Please contact Joan at 775-5548 if you can help for 3 hours once a month. 6. ...Portland Adventist Medical Center continues to provide major support in goods and services to PACS and the Family Health Clinic? 7. ..Portland Adventist Acade my collected over 5,000 cans o f food for PACS as part o f a food cans were collected and matching grants o f $12,500 were earned. We thank the O re g o n SDA C o n fe re n c e and Adventist Development and Relief Agency for their challenge and fi nancial backing. 8. ...PACS has a new volunteer coordinator? We welcome Winnie Jester to our PACS team. She also, is donating 20 hours/week o f her valu able time to help us. We really appre ciate her and keep her very busy! 9. ...New volunteers are joining PACS all the time? The most recent, along with Joan Hull and Winnie Jest er are: Marvin and Eva Seibel, Sherry Asbury, Juanita Suave, Millie Waters, and Frank and Rosalie Sawzak. 10. ...PACS is open every day o f the week? We are open on Fridays from 9:30 - 11:30 am and Monday - Thursday from 9:00 - 11:30 am. 11. ...The ninth grade from Hood View Jr. Academy comes ev ery Friday to run PACS? We have so much enjoyed them. W ejust received word they have been chosen to re ceive a Golden Rule Award from JC Penny. They were selected from state wide nominations as one o f 15 run- ner’s up W e’re very proud o f them! 12. .B e a Olsen is still selling even though she doesn’t have a spot to hold regular sales? She sells a few things here and there and is still aver aging sale o f $600 a month. PACS would like to purchase space to start a Thrift Shop so the benefit sales can be an everyday operation. 13. ...The Portland Marathon is on Sunday, October 3 , 1995? PACS is asking anyone who is planning to par ticipate in the marathon to get spon sors to raise funds. Please call 775- 5742 to get an information packet. 14. ...You should make all mon etary donations payable to PACS? Even when you turn contributions in through your church, please make your check payable to PACS. This will simplify handling the funds. 15. ...You can be an elite mem ber o f Faith 500? Anyone willing to donate $100 or more per year to PACS becomes a member. These donations can be made all at once, quarterly, or in monthly installments. 16. ...PACS can use whatever you have to donate? We have clients standing in line for furniture and household articles as well as clothing and linens. The churches are especially be ing cited for their partnerships with local non-profit organizations to in crease shelter capacity and special services. Some o f the congregations open sh e lte r space d u rin g th e w inter months by usingchurch facilities such as recreational halls, kitchens, m eet ing rooms. Others provide transi tional housing on a year-around ba sis. An invitation to all college, graduate school and seminary students; and all college ministry leaders in the pacific northwest. Many o f you are already famil iar with the work God is doing among college students throughout the Unit ed States. Beginning with a great outpouring o f confession, repentance, and reconciliation at Howard Payne University (Brownville, TX) earlier this year, many other campuses are being similarly impacted. Students at Wheaton College, Northwestern C ollege in St. Paul, M innesota, Asbury College (KY), George Fox College, Multnomah Bible College are just a few o f the places where the LORD has moved in an extraordi- nary. powerful manner. A similaroutpouring began here at Multnomah just two weeks ago, and grew in intensity' from Tuesday night (April 11) right up to our chap el service on Good Friday. When a simple invitation was given for stu dents to come and confess their sins, the response was so great that classes were canceled and the chapel lasted until 3:30. The confessions were ac companied by weeping, repentance, and much loving prayer. A new sense o f the LORD’S power was experi enced by many. One professor, when asked if he had ever seen anything like this before, replied, “Yes, in 1949, when I was at the Wheaton ' revival.’” We believe it is safe to say the LORD has begun a significant work that honors His Name. command. After seeking His face and submitting to His direction, the decision was made to extend a call for college students and college min istry leaders throughout the Pacific North west to come together and seek the LORD, to cooperate with what He is doing. We have set aside Friday, May 5, at 7:00 p.m. as a time for college students and college ministry leaders to gather here at Multnomah to seek theLO RD . T h ese recent o u tp o u r ings raise tw o sim ple, but very im p o rtan t q u e stio n s we should address: 1. What is the LORD saying to us through what is He is doing? 2. How do we best cooperate with Him in his work? In response to the recent out pourings, college students from three Portland colleges met on Saturday, April 22 to seek the LORD and see how we might best respond to what He is doing. It was amazing to see the unity the LORD had brought to the group, though only two o f the stu dents had met before! This has en hanced the program o f PACS, result ing in greater services and goods being available to the needy. These skills have not only im pacted PACS and the city of Portland, but will continue to impact communi ties as the students progress through life. It is only by educating our youth that we build a core of committed service-oriented individuals imbued with skills which will keep them pro ductive members o f society while help ing others become the same. The governing board, volunteers and staff o f PACS join the teachers and administration o f HVJA in salut ing these students for truly rem ark able dedication to their community. They have been tested and by their example have represented the youth o f America. They have reinforced the fact that in this community and across the nation our youth are con scientious and reliable, learning to become the leaders o f tomorrow. We are proud o f them! deciding which should be kept, which should be sent to other places, and which should be recycled. They are taught how to prepare clothes for distribution and how to organize a distribution center. Food d is trib u tio n - S tu d e n ts pack food boxes for a three-day sup ply o f food for families o f various sizes. They give out food based on nutritious menus, handling govern ment commodities properly while supplementing with other foods to provide enough for elients to feed their families well balanced meals. G eneral daily o p e ra tio n s—The students help in the general running o f the agency, performing various housekeeping duties such as clean ing, sorting, repackaging food and other duties as asked. This program has been o f great interest to other agencies in the Port land area and over North America. It is a unique approach to community service. Great responsibility' has been placed on the students and they have responded eagerly. Their resource fulness, willingness and inherent tal ent, especially in working directly with the clients has exceeded all ex pectations. We use drugs to face one day to another, we use excuses for failure and each other for gain. We use ourselves like we use others. W hat do we gain in the end? Nothing but loss. Jesus said "Knock and the door shall be open, seek and ye shall find, ask it shall be given unto you." These are laws o f our own personal responsi bility, these are things that we must do for self. Just because we don’t understand the laws, not just these but others, doesn’t mean that we will escape consequences. We must do for self, if we d on’t do for self, self will not do for us. have fresh, nutritious food. Sham poo, toothpaste, toilet paper and per sonal hygiene items are also much appreciated. 17. PACS is willing to come and pick up large items? We will make every effort to send our truck to you if you need help with transport ing items to us. Just call 775-6741 to make arrangements. 18. .. PACS has morning wor ship every day and prays regularly for help and guidance? We run on faith and we thank the Lord daily for the many answers He provides. They talk candidly while using techniques which pre serve the dignity and self-esteem o f the people they serve. They make referrals in instances where PACS does not have the resources to pro vide for all the needs presented.
