Annual Event Begins May 13 Ministry to mothers is the theme for two workshops planned for May. “Ministry o f Moms Sharing is a pro cess for mothers to experience peer ministry, self-discovery, mutual sup port and prayer. It promotes personal and spiritual growth, and helps m oth ers to bring new strength to their families and the Christian com m u nity. Leadership training sessions are scheduled for Monday May 8, 1995 at St. Pius X Catholic Church (1280 N. W. Saltzman Road) Portland, and Thursday, May 11, at St. Mary Catho lic Church (25th and Tyler Streets) Corvallis. The time for both work shops is 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The M.O.M.S. ministry provides an eight week journey for mothers. It was developed by Sister Paula Hagen, O. S.B., from Jacksonville, FL. She has served as a parish family life minister in Florida, Arizona and in Minnesota. Sister Paula will conduct the leadership training sessions in May. The conference is the fourth such meeting in history and the last of this century. M ore than 2 ,2 5 0 d e le g a te s from all 50 sta te s and the U.S. t e r r ito r ie s w ill g a th e r at the W a sh in g to n H ilton H otel to d e v e lo p r e s o lu tio n s w h ic h w ill shape aging n atio n al policy over the next decad e. The theme of the conference is “America Now and Into the 21st Century: G enerations Aging T o gether with Independence, Opportu nity, and Dignity." The agenda consists of four is sues: (1) Assuring Comprehensive Health Care Including Long Term Care; (2) Promoting Economic Se curity; (3) Maximizing Housing and Support Service Options; and (4) Maximizing Options for a Quality Life. Two cross-cutting concerns per vade the agenda and will influence discussions at the Conference. These are; (1) interdependence among generations and among mem bers of extended families, and the responsibility o f individuals to plan for changes that will occur through out their lifespan; and (2) unique contributions and needs of special populations, especially veterans, caregivers (including grandparents), rural elderly, women, minorities and individuals with disabilities. Elizabeth Davis is a m ember of the G overnor’s Commission on Se nior Services. “I am excited to have this oppor tunity to represent Oregon at the 1995 W HCoA” says Davis. “Our work in W ashington in May will help to define a national aging policy for our country.
