P age B4 N ovember 3 0 , 1994 • T he P ortland O bserver Monsters and a Crazed Scientist Discovered In Downtown Portland A seven-foot monster, a myste rious man with razor-sharp fangs, and a crazed scientist will be "stalk ing" downtown Portland for the next several weeks as part o f Portland Repertory T heatre’s production of The Doom o f Frankenstein, running through Decem ber 3 at the Rep’s Mainstage. The M ainstage will be trans formed into a castle o f doom for this slightly tongue-in-cheek tale o f gothic horror, adapted by the R ep's Produc ing A rtistic D ire c to r G e o ffre y Sherman and Paul W onsek from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Doom o f Frankenstein tells the story o f Victor Frankenstein, a crazed scientist who is determined to dis cover the natural forces to regenerate life. Expelled from the university academia for his unorthodox practic es, he escapes to the mountains to conduct bizarre research, and is con sumed in his greatest experiment o f all: to bring back to life his former colleague and mentor, Friederich On the brink o f a major discovery, his plans are thwarted by the local in spector and the arrival o f Lucian, Friederich’s son with a mysterious past. The Mainstage w ill literally light up with state-of-the-art pyrotechnics and special effects to bring the story to life, including 187 sound effects, 13 strobe lights, several hundred elec trical lights, and four smoke ma chines.
