The bank was cited for its efforts to assess the needs of local commu nities and to develop financial prod ucts to meet those needs. Home improvement and repair loans were specifically mentioned as examples of successful business prac tices. But studies show that home work has a tremendous influence on a child's academie success. Your most important assign ment is to encourage learning by providing an environment that mo tivates children to become indepen dent, self-reliant, responsible stu dents. Even if they have no homework, set aside 10 to 20 minutes a day for reading together, writing letters or discussing the day's classes. • Place: Create a serious study environm ent and equip your child with the necessities to become a se rious student. A bookcase or desk with hutch provides accessible storage for ref erence resources to help children solve problems on their own — with- out relying on your help. • Space: Create both psycho logical and physical space for seri ous studying. Honor homework time by establishing periods of quiet throughout the house and eliminat ing TV and phone calls during a mu tually agreed upon time Also, honor a child's physical needs by supplying a work surface that provides room for both study materials and elbows. • Lighting: Strong, direct illu mination is especially important to successful studying. It reduces eye fatigue and visually defines the work area, helping children focus their attention.
