K night, an accom plished singer and actress, re cently jo in ed with A unt Jem ina brands to serve as its national spokesperson in a new ad v ertis ing cam paign. Knight says the partnership with Auto Jem ina brands is a p erfect fit. “ Auto Jem ina products have been in my fam ily for g en era tions... th a t’s w hat my mom used to make. Knight also will be releasing a new album this year entitled Just For You and em barks on a concert tour in 1995. Also this year, she hits the airw aves w ith a syndicated radio talk show, ap pears in a recurring role on the new FOX-TV series New York U ndercover and will be honored with a star on Hollywood, C alif.'s “ W alk o f Fam e.” Celebrate National Women's Health Month Midlife and older women are invited to a public meeting and discussion opportunity to celebrate National Women’s Health Month, sponsored by the Portland Chap ter. Keynote Speaker is Therese Waterhous, RD, PhD, Nutritionist at the Kaiser Research Center. The topic o f discussion is “The Chal lenge to M idlife and O lder Women: Osteoporosis.” The meet ing will be located at Portland Im pact Senior Center, Tabor Building, 4610 S.E. Belmont. W hile the v o lu n teers work to im prove the quality o f care for the citizens living in long term care facilities, they also prom ote dignity, autonom y and the rights o f the residents. V ol unteers are currently being re cruited for a six-session training pro g ram b e g in n in g S atu rd ay , S eptem ber 17 at St. V in cen t’s H ospital in Portland. C ertified Om budsm en inves tigate com plaints and concerns on b e h a lf o f the residents and then w ork with the facilities to m ake changes that best serve the residents. The role takes a spe cial kind o f volunteer — volun teers m ust not only care about the eld erly, but m ust also have e x c e lle n t c o m m u n icatio n and problem -solving skills. While the jo b is challenging, the C ertified Om budsm en find their work very rew arding. It is an opportunity to make a real d ifference in the lives o f the residents w hile d e veloping new skills in com m uni cation, p roblem -solving and ad vocacy. These volunteers spend b etw e en o n e and fiv e h o u rs w eekly at their assigned fa cili ties, and a one-year m inim um com m itm ent is required. Tips On Handling Anger A u th o rities in dom estic v io lence say a key to keeping anger in check is to focus on y o u rself and becom e fully accountable and responsible for your behav ior. T he M e n ’s R eso u rc e C e n te r in P o rtla n d p ro v id e d the follow ing tips on how to h an d le y o u r a n g e r: • Don’t be controlling. Most violent acts are frustrated attempts to control another Remember that ulti mately you cannot control other people, places or situations. You can only control yourself. • Be assertive. Stand up for yourself, but in a way that is respect ful of others. • Express it early. Ifyou cannot or do not want to let your anger go, then express it quickly rather than letting it fester and grow. • Be P o lite. A nger is no ex cuse for rudeness. R udeness d is tracts from the relevant m essage in your anger. F am iliarity is also no excess for rudeness. D on’t the people you are the closest to deserve the sam e p o liteness and respect you give a stranger? • Useclear communication. Fo cus on your feelings, on specific behaviors and events, and on what you want. Watch out for blame and accusations. • K eep p e rsp e c tiv e . D o n ’t fuel the fire in your m ind with inaccurate assum ptions or o v e r stated b eliefs. W atch out for w ords in your thinking such as “ alw ays” or “ n ev er.” • T ak e a tim e out. If you think you are about to lose your te m p e r tak e a tim e -o u t. Say “ t i m e - o u t ” a n d le a v e lo n g enough to calm down. W hile you are gone calm y o u rself down (ex- erc ise or m u scle re la x a tio n ), clear up your thinking, and make a plan. Then return to the situ a tion to continue w hat you were dong in this calm er state. It is not a tim e-out if you do not return.
