For Angclus, Mr. N ascim ento has once again re cruited a num ber of friends and ad m irers, including Jam es Taylor, P e ter G ab riel, Jon A n d erso n , P at M ethcny, and Herbie Hancock. Pre viously, both Paul Simon and Quincy Jones have made guest appearances for Mr. Nascim ento, as hits W ayne Shorter. In his perform ance on A n gclus, Mr. Shorter pays homage to the “ N ative D ancer” LP, a brilliant collaboration between Nascim cnto’s voice and Shorter’s saxophone that helped launch the singer on to the international jazz scene nearly two decades ago. Today, Mr. N ascim ento is one o f the rare vocalists who can draw audiences around the world regard less o f language. B e yond ja z z , and beyond pop, the N ascim ento sound is bittersweet, syn thesizing undercurrents of numerous disparate cultures. M ilton N ascim ento was bom in 1942 in Rio dc Janeiro. A t the age of two, his adoptive parents, both white, brought him to Tres Pontas, a small town in the inland state o f Minas Gerais. His m other, Lilia, a house wife, as a student had sung in a choir conducted by Villa Lobos, the Bra zilian m odernist com poser; she also used to sing at local festivities ac co m p an ied by her son, M ilton. N ascim ento’s father, Josino, had a passion for electronics. A part from having been a m athem atics teacher, he once ran the local radio station, where the young M ilton occasion ally served as d.j. M ilton N ascim ento is part o f the w orld com m unity o f artists who struggle to preserve the Earth, and to respect all human rights. He partici pates in the efforts o f Amnesty Inter national , G reenpeace, and the France L iberte’ Foundation. In Brazil, to gether with Indians, rubber tappers and river peoples, he has developed initiatives to preserve the environ ment, especially in the A m azon. Mr N ascim ento’s efforts have been hon ored by the United Nations.
