She hailed from M ississippi like his father, a V ietnam veteran drafted at age 18 w ho later returned to the South and joined his siblings in The V arnado Brothers, releasing a couple o f gospel singles in the early E ighties, before moving to Detroit. “ I listened to a lot o f O ld School rappers, tryin’ to be as different as possible but keepm it real. W hen rap first cam e out every rapper was real. T here w asn’t no pop rappers. E very- body was hard. N ow some rappers arc g o in ’ H ollywood." When he was 15, Snoop relocated with his family to North Long Beach and attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School. There, the friendly, easy-going teenager led spontaneous rap concerts that would draw hundreds of students at lunchtime.
