The Soul Train Music Awards, hopes to repeat his success w ith a new awards telecast. The Soul Train Comedy Awards, a live two- hour prime lime broadcast which w ill emanate from the Santa Monica C ivic Auditorium onTuesday, A u gu st3 ,1993. The Soul Train comedy Awards w ill annually recognize and honor the year’ s funniest African-Am erican com edy performers in television, film and stand-up. The program w ill comprise 10 categories and two awards o f special distinction which w ill be announced in the near future. Nominees in the tclevison and film categories w ill be selected through a broad-based poll o f A frican- American T V viewers and moviegoers. Stand-up nominees w ill be selected through an invita tion al “ Soul Train Comedy Showdown” to be held at a venue in Los Angeles six to eight weeks prior to the telecast. Cornelius, who w ill executive pro duce the Soul Tram Comedy Awards, noted, “ W e’ re not re-inventing the awards format, but we learned through our other venture that i t ’s the people we choose to honor that makes our program unique and special.” He added, “ Our comedy awards program w ill help ac knowledge and bring attention to the burgeoning rise o f African-Am erican comedians, in all mediums, sparked by an ever-developing pool o f talented com ics who perform both for late night and cable and for fam ily audiences as w e ll.” Triune Entertainm ent company, syndicators o f C ornelius’ long-running soul Train weekly series and The Soul Train Music Awards, which is going into its seventh year, w ill also distribute The Soul Train comedy Awards. T ri bune anticipates the comedy awards program w ill reach 85 percent o f U.S. households and 95 percent o f African- American households. “ W e’re very enthusiastic about be ing involved w ith another exceptional program concept from Don Cornelius,” says Tribune Entertainment company President Don Hacker. “ He lias a proven track record w ith the tremendous suc cess o f the Soul Train series and the Soul Train Music Awards, and we’ re pleased to be a part o f this original program idea.” Cornelius promised a fast-paced format sim ilar to the style o f the Soul Train Music Awards, w ith exciting stand-up comedy and musical perfor mances and a star-studded black-tie audience. The nationally syndicated special w ill be produced by Soul Train Music Awards co-producer Anthony Sabalino and Entertainment Ton ight and Soul Train Mucic Awards director Ron De Moracs w ill direct. Tony Cornelius w ill co-produce. Tri-Met Fare increase, New Service Effective Sept.6 On Sept. 6, T ri-M e t fares increase a nickel, new lift-equipped buses h it the streets and the largest service in crease in 10 years lakes effect. Fare increase, youth discount M ost customers w ill pay slightly higher fares, w hile people under 18 w ill ride fo r a discount. Cash and ticket fares increase a nickel, m onthly passes increase $2, and Honored C itizen passes go up 75 cents. The increase is estimated to bring T ri-M e t an addi- I lional $730,000 a year. T ri-M e t p olicy call for annual review o f fares to m ain tain levels that generally keep pace w ith infla tion through small, regular fare increases. T ri-M e t last raised fares in September 1990. As part an aggressive campaign to attract more customers, T ri-M e t w ill »ffer a new 70-cent discount youth cash fare fo r people under 18. dis counted tickets, sold in books o f 10, w ill be availab le at p a rticip a tin g schools and fo r the firs t time at a ll regular T ri-M e t outlets. W ith the addition o f 118 new buses, a ll but a few buses w ill be accessible to customers who use lifts to board vehicles, all buses are lift- equipped on weekends. Weekday cab service is provided as an alternative on Lines 12-Barbur, 12-Sandy, 57- Forcst Gove, 58-Sunset Express, 88- SW 198th Ave. and 96-W ilsonville- Tualatin. A lso aimed at attracting more customers, bus service w ill increase 3.25 percent - the largest increase in 10 years. The improvements respond to ever-increasing T ri-M e t ridership by adding buses to reduce rush-hour crowding on m ajor lines. Additional evening and weekend buses are also scheduled. As part o f T ri-M e t’ s an nual service review, some trips w ill be discontinued due to low ridership and reallocated to provide more buses on heavily used lines. The service im provements incorporate comments heard at public meetings last spring. N ew schedules, tic k e ts and m onthly passes are available at most Albertson and Safeway stores, T ri- M et offices in southeast Portland or Pioneer Courthouse Square, and many other neighborhood locations.
