Stand-up nominees w ill be selected
through an invita tion al “ Soul Train
Comedy Showdown” to be held at a
venue in Los Angeles six to eight weeks
prior to the telecast.
Cornelius, who w ill executive pro
duce the Soul Tram Comedy Awards,
noted, “ W e’ re not re-inventing the
awards format, but we learned through
our other venture that i t ’s the people we
choose to honor that makes our program
unique and special.” He added, “ Our
comedy awards program w ill help ac
knowledge and bring attention to the
burgeoning rise o f African-Am erican
comedians, in all mediums, sparked by
an ever-developing pool o f talented com

ing involved w ith another exceptional
program concept from Don Cornelius,”
says Tribune Entertainment company
President Don Hacker. “ He lias a proven
track record w ith the tremendous suc

Soul Train Music Awards, and we’ re
pleased to be a part o f this original
program idea.”
Cornelius promised a fast-paced
format sim ilar to the style o f the Soul
