It’s not too early to start and the effort could save you time and money. Now is the tim e to start gathering to gether your receipts, earning statements, canceled checks and other records. If you w ant to donate to charitable organizations or pay off some o f those m edical or dental bills, you must do so before the end o f the year to be able to deduct them on your tax return. IRA contributions for 1991 can be m ade thru April 15, 1992. W hile you’re getting your records to gether, you may be inclined to throw out your older files. W a it-th e IRS recom mends you keep those records for at least three years after the return was due or two after the tax was paid, w hichever is later. Some records should be kept longer: prop erty records, home im provem ent inform a tion, W-2’s showing social Security amounts, and costs o f stocks and bonds. In general, these records should be kept as long as you own the property. It’s also helpful to keep copies o f the actual tax returns you sent 1RS and the instruction package. These will assist you if you need to am end your return or need to respond to a letter from 1RS asking about your return.
