One o f the m ost popular events o f the annual Portland Rose Festival is available rig ht n ow — as a Christmas g ift. It's the annual upriver cruise on Navy ships o f th e Rose Festival fleet. A bout 24 ships o f the U .S. and Canadian Navies and the U .S . Coast Guard are expected to arrive fo r the 1988 Rose Festival on June 8 and 9, and local citizens can purchase one day cruises on th e ships fro m A storia to d o w n to w n Portland. Three trip packages are offered — O ption I is the "B o a rd O n ly " package fo r one-w ay passage on one o f the sfiips from A storia to Portland, fo r $30 per person. O ption II is the "R ed Eye T rip " w hich includes bus transportation from Portland to Astoria — leaving Portland about 3 a.m . — and a trip on board a Navy ship, fo r $45 per person. The m ost popular trip — O ption III — includes a bus ride from Portland the night before the cruise, dinner and overnight accom m odations in Astoria, and a continental breakfast before boarding the ships the next m orning. The restaurant was "la u n c h e d " at a cerem ony December 3 by a ch am pagne sw inging Santa w h o wished the restaurant a successful voyage as he broke the b ottle over the fro n t deck railing in true m aritim e fashion. The 160 seat restaurant, w hich is operated by Hotel M anagem ent A sso ciates o f Beaverton, serves lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch, w ith live e nte r tainm ent seven nights a w eek.
