Page 4, Portland Observer, December 9, 198/ THE ENTERTAINMENT SEEN ABO UT TOW N Saga of the M add Shopper Part 2 The alternative to department store Christmas shopping is certainly not discount store shopping at your local madhouses, like Toys R Terror or Kooky Mart, where mothers line up before opening hour with full contact gear on and shopping carts powered by helpless fathers or 2 or 3 horsepower (or kid-powered engines), the carts make record time up and down the aisles, with the older kids running interference, and mom making expert passes into the moving shopping carts that would have Dan Marino and Joe Montana envious of such expert timing. Where does it end you ask? It ends right here by planning in advance and using just a little smarts. Let your fingers not only do the writing, but the walking, too. Make a list (just like Santa) and put what you want to purchase next to the names. Next, call the stores early in the day that you think may carry the specific item that you're looking for. Ask not only for the item, but the sizes and colors that they may have left. Let's also not forget that in this age of Federal Express, Air Express and Overnight Overnight, the delight of catalogue shop ping. These services offer you a chance to look over the items but order them over the phone via credit cards. Next, if you do like the hustle and bustle of "hands-on Christmas shop ping, consider public transportation. It's much easier to get on and off the bus than it is to chase down a parking spot. Davis has appeared on the telethon numerous times, encouraging view ers to donate money to the College Fund to help deserving students obtain a college education. ,, ..rc "Sammy Davis, Jr. is a class act, both on and off the stage, says UNC.F President and Chief Executive Officer Christopher F. Edley. Davis' support for the UNCF and the Parade of Stars" is no surprise^ Throughout his illustrious career, which began at age 4. Davis has generated and donated millions of dollars to worthy causes. Philanthropic activities have been as much a part of his life as entertaining millions of people all over • ¿n * ’< - the world. e The UNCF has been one of the major charitable causes that Davis has consistently supported. In 1976 he served as chairman of the organization's Special Events Division, which is responsible for staging a number of turn 4 ' ‘I •‘*7; •• « -• raising events. His return appearance on the annual "Lou Rawls Parade of Stars tele then have become a favored tradition. Whether he's singing songs, telling favorite stories or making sincere pleas for donations, Davis' contributions to ’• » <?>•> > i » ■ • ■ : the telethon are always memorable. The telethon has raised more than $40 million in the past sever years, and Davis has been an integral part of that success. The "Lou Rawls Parade of Stars" is made possible with the support of its national and founding sponsor, Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc., which has underwritten the production of the program annually since its inception eight years ago. Through its Budweiser brand, Anheuser Busch also pro vides national promotional, advertising and marketing support for the pro The Kellogg Company, national co-sponsor for the third year, is con tributing $1 million. Kellogg will also host five celebrity dinners throughout the country to help raise additional funds for the United Negro College Fund. In addition, the telethon recieves enthusiastic support from Kellogg em ployees who work as volunteers during the program American Airlines, which sponsors the "W atch, Win, and Fly" contest during the telethon, is the program's contributing sponsor. Polaroid Cor poration and Tylenol are the telethon's contributing co-sponsors. Funds raised by the telethon help the 42 private, historically Black col leges and universities of the UNCF keep tuition low for some 45,000 stu dents. Nearly 90 percent of these students require financial assistance to complete their college education. Other stars who will appear on the Parade of Stars include Ben Vereen, Bob Hope, Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Mickey Gilley Jody Watley, Freddie Jackson, Lola Falana, Emmanuel Lewis, Pia Zadora, Kashif ;>T v /Y i '.F V í and picked up. When you go shopping, do not take the children unless you plan to spend a lot of time. The term "Christmas is for kids" comes from these modern days and times, and can you really blame them? With the bright lights and colors and music in the air, the little ones you've loved and cared for suddenly become aliens; someone else's kids, and junior mental cases. It’s best to dedicate a whole shopping day or weekend just for them, and after that, even they will have had enough of the madness to last them til next year. Last, but not least, be careful and don't carry vast amounts of cash and shoulder bags that can be lost, laid down, and forgotten, or even stolen; and DO NOT WAIT 'TIL THE LAST MINUTE like everyone else will inevitably do. Be smart and make this the most enjoyable holiday season you ve ex perienced in years .. . Well, what are you waiting for!!! CHARGE IT!!! M idas Announces Toys for Tots Kick-O ff "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas," as area Midas Muffler and Brake Shops prepare to kick-off their fifth annual sponsor ship of the Marine Corps Reserve's Toys For Tots collection drive. Through December 19, participa ting Midas Shops will serve as drop off sites for new, ungiftwrapped toys, which will be distributed by local Reservists to needy children. Portland and Vancouver residents can donate to the Toys For Tots collection drive by visiting any of the ten Midas Muffler and Brake Shop locations in the metropolitan Port land area. "During your holiday shopping, please remember the needy children in our area and pick-up a toy for the Toys For Tots collection drive," says franchisee Mike Minter. Founded in 1947 by Marine Colonel Bill Hendricks, Toys For Tots has grown to become an inter national campaign, that provides toys to millions of needs children each holiday season, through the assistance of corporate sponsors, such as Midas International Cor poration. International Christmas Tree Show A variety of ethnic groups will gather to share their cultures in the International Christmas Tree Show to be held Saturday, December 12 at the World Forestry Center. The show will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Center's Exhibit Hall. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for students and senior citizens. Portlander Margie Boule’ will lead the French American School child ren's choral group, who will enter tain with holiday music. The VIP Singers will also be featured. Cos tumes and complimentary punch and cookies will add to the festi vities while the groups tranform eight-foot noble fir trees into color ful Christmas trees. In addition, pre-show Christmas films will be presented as a special treat for children from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with popcorn available during the movies. The purpose of the Vigil, according to Marie Brown, Multnomah County President, is to provide a setting in which family and friends may remember, in a spe cial way, their loved ones who have been killed by drunk drivers. The public is invited to attend (free of charge) and support the vic tim's families. The Candlelight Vigil also begins a period of "hope for a less-violent future" as MADD sponsors other programs and projects during De cember to deter holiday drunk driving crashes. Among these other projects is the "Red Ribbon Cam paign" in which citizens are en couraged to tie a red ribbon to their left car-door handle (or left-side mirror) as a sign to America that they hope for a safe holiday season and a stop to drunk driving. "I hope that every citizen of Ore gon will join us in our holiday pro grams. The candlelight Vigil is a great way to say 'I care' ", said Ms. Brown.
