August 12, 1987, Portland Observer, Page 5 KUSASA: African American Artists by Charlotte Lewis A reception was held August 6th for the KUSASA: African American Artists exhibit at Graystone Gallery. The crowd of elbow-to-elbow art enthusiasts were greeted with quite a diverse show. KUSASA is defined in Zulu language as "tom orrow ". Today, non white artists do not have the opportunities or respect attributed to other artists. Visibility is limited and "First World A rt" has been suppressed in its original form and source; and has been seen in the guise of German Expres sionists, Surrealists and Abstract Expressionist work. Picasso, Klee, Moore, Modigliani and others have been especially influenced by African art. Ali Mazrui, scholar, author and creator of "The Africans", has said that the African American and Black South African will play an important role in the world tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. The artists exhibiting in KUSASA have had the unique experience of being influenced by suppression, slavery and colonialism. Their black heri tage has not been widely recorded or documented. How does a person draw from creative experiences under these circumstances? How does a Black artist answer certain questions concerning identity and receive rein forcement to achieve creative expression? Through these challenges they must search the cobwebs of their minds and try to recall their ancestor s cultural roots; and although they must work through the interruption of slavery, they must begin to gather up those threads to create a continuum of the gifted artisans who preceded them. Hopefully, they will continue to generate, to educate and to demonstrate their own cultural experience, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. The KUSASA exhibit is a selection of works from twelve artists. Adriene Cruz exhibits some of the most colorful fibre art ever, with new design patterns. Sherrian Haggar works warmly in molded clay forms, and Kathy Millard's work displays striking techniques in earthenware. Richard Brown's photography is a statement from his Nicaragua trip which brings us close to our Central American sisters and brothers; and Samuel Bryant s photos are a flash of nudes in motion; joining Michael Grice s historical display using the video medium. Mark Little has submitted a sensitive group of paintings with subjects from an American experience. Kathy Pen- YOU ARE WELCOME TO WORSHIP AT 84 N.E.
