Patti Labelle MCA W ord of the w eek As the hot August sun blazed upon the Portland area Saturday after noon, the freshest rappers, scratchers and musicians assembled to deliver custom versions of Rhythm and Blues in Hip Hop style J W Fridays brainchild, "Waterfront Fresh." kicked from 1 30 til 9 30 and, except for a few technical problems, was an effective and educational showcase for both professional and amateur entertainers The spectators should be applauded, also, for braving the beat and add ing the spark and energy needed to make the day a success The afternoon started with Scratch Master H followed by E S R Crew, Electro Wiz and Crew, and Cazel Then came the Mos' Del Crew, that is actually a Hip Hop band entering the Portland music scene with a fresh new style Mos' Def was followed by The Dynamic Sound Machine and D L B b The Untouchable Rappers, who delivered a well rounded production that led right into the Portland debut of Seattle's N Cognito N Cognito displayed a high energy show of hard core funk I would really like to see them play in a club atmosphere The night ended with the Street Music Band who surprised me with an electrifying all new show From the first to the last note our home boys gave it all they had, bringing Waterfront Fresh II" to a dynamic close "The Dubbman" J .W Friday says he'll be back with something else this fall, so keep it tuned to your community media via KBOO and The Portland Observer T.C.
