r Hage age 4, Portland Observer, August 7, 1986 College Parker said the purpose o f CITY is to help students build their basic com puters. skills and enhance their awareness of Children participating in the program receive the follow ing benefits: im provem ent o f their academic skills; higher m o tiva tion; com puter literacy; instructional recreation; development o f social skills; and increased self esteem Dr Parker said CITY is reaching children at earlier grades in order to stim ulate their interests in learning and m otivate them in being produc tive citizens. The program, w hich is for children in kindergarten through 6th grade, has reached some 143 children since it began. According to Dr Parker, 35 children are enrolled in the summer program at PCC Cascade Campus. "Our summer program lasts six weeks, Monday through Friday. In the m orning we deal w ith academics In the after noon, we give the kids an o pp ortunity to choose between group piano, crafts or c o m p u te rs," says Dr. Parker Dr. Parker said CITY operated out o f H um bolt and King s c h o o ls this past year. He said he w ould like to expand the program to more inner city schools. "W e are looking at Verdon, W oodlaw n, Irvington and Sabin schools. I plan to Or.
