Beaverton, July 11-13, for a family reunion. According to Evelyn Richardson, publicity chairwoman, Pleasant Hill family reunions go back more than a generation. During the last ten years, she says the family has been holding national reunions every other year "Usually, we hold them in Texas, near the Pleasant Hill area where the family started This is the first year we've ever had the reunion out of state W e re expect mg 500 to 1.000 people to show up." The family states the purpose of the reunion is "to renew old ac quaintances and make new ones, to reioice in the family's flowering of children, and to fondly remember those relatives who are missing." Reunion organizers have sc he duled softball games, talent shows, tours and church services for the gathering Meanwhile, the Greewood is busy gearing up for the reunion: a block of 100 rooms has been set aside, the Ballroom has been reserved for Friday and Saturday night, dinner for 300 500 is being planned for both evenings. High Court Reaffirms Affirmative Action by Jerry Garner Last Wednesday the US Supreme Court ruled 6 - 3 that court ordered "concent decrees" used by cities to eradicate racial discrimination in employment was legal The court decision was a major victory for minorities and civil rights organizations, and a major defeat for President Reagan and the U S Justice Department The case was brought before the high court by the Reagan Justice Department The Department had asserted that such decrees were illegal and should only benefit actual victims of racial discrimination in employment Under the leadership of William Bradford Reynolds, the Justice Da partment, in ,985. urged 50 local government agencies to stop using consent decrees The high court ruling was praised by Robert Phillips, Multnomah County Affirmative Action Officer Multnomah County is pleased with the Supreme Court's decision. The ruling by the court reaffirms Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act which states that federal district courts could use broad authority to elimi nate the last vestiges’ of racil dis crimination." Phillips said the court's decision will have no affect on the County s Affirmative Action program. "Mult nomah County is committed to the concept of Affirmative Action. Be fore the County implemented its Affirmative Action and Equal Op portunity Policies and Practices, the County received input from over 14 organizations of groups represen ting those covered by the plan." Under consent decrees, govern ment agencies can use goal and timetables in the hiring and pro motion of minorities and women. The hotel was beautifully deco rated with various shades of pink flowers and candlelabras on round tables. In the center of the banquet room was a beautiful pink tier fountain birthday cake for Elizabeth. The room was adorned with other fountains which added elegance Pink personalized place mats and name cards and a huge pink banner were designed with "This is Your Life, Elizabeth Jackson" were de signed by her son-in law, Alfred Daniels, an engineer. Mr. David Flanagan, a Portland Public School teacher, was the master of ceremony. His voice and flair for words were the high point of the afternoon as each guest entered the banquet room At the guest book table was an other teacher from Irvington School, Beverly Johnson She assisted each guest with special comments for their stage entrance. Each guest walked across the brightly lighted doorway across the stage platform while Elizabeth was busy guessing. Willie Johnson was the photo grapher for this occassion. When Debra Wells and Clifton Wells entered, they sang several songs plus Vernon Brozzle (Sing ing Sam the Postman). Elizabeth was presented with an engraved "This is Your Life" album with each picture of her surprise guests She was escorted to her suite to wait for a conference tele phone call from her two sisters in Las Vegas, Nevada and Mississippi Michael and Rosemary ended the afternoon by giving each guest an engraved thank-you card enclosed with a family picture which stated.
