In the annual two-mile run, Darnell Valentine finished first with a time o f 10 m inutes and 11 seconds, Joe Atkinson was second and Steve Colter third. The Blazers should be a stronger rebounding team this year w ith the addition of 6-9 Coleman and 6-8 Ken Johnson o f Michigan State. Coleman and Johnson were acquired by th e i Blazers in a trade w ith the Chicago Bulls. Coleman was a second-round draft pick o f the Bulls last season, but opted to play in Ita ly when he co u ld n't reach a contract agreement with the Bulls. When Coleman was asked to com pare the P ro League in Ita ly to the N B A , he replied, "th e re 's better com pen ion in the N B A " Coleman said he looked forw ard to playing in the N B A W h ile at M a ry la n d , Coleman played center and guarded 7-4 Ralph Sampson when Maryland played arch A ( .( riv a l V irg in ia Coleman said the referee wouldn't let anyone touch Sampson. Coach I ee says that many athletes are not prepared to go directly from a high school basketball program in to a major college program I ee said that he w ould like to develop a "fe e d e r p ro g ia m " at P ( ( U nder this p ro g ra m , basketball players w ill receive counseling that w ill prepare them to r the academic life o f m ajor colleges in order to deal with the pressure ol big time college basketball I ee stated that he has seen many local high school basketball placets who went lo a tour-year in stitution and, lor some reason, didn't » .1 make it. They return to the co m m u n ity and th in k o f themselves as failures because they couldn't make it academically or couldn't fit into the program.
