The Portland Trail Blazers opened
th e ir 1985-86 T ra in in g C am p last
Friday at Green Meadows G o lf and
A th le tic C lu b . On the same day,
guard Terry Porter, the Blazer's first-
round draft pick, and Ben Coleman,
free agent fo rw a rd o f M a ry la n d ,
signed contracts with the Blazers The

In a ll, 16 players are tryin g fo r
the twelve starting positions. Seven of
the sixteen are either rookies or free
agents. They are Brett Applegate, Joe
Atkinson, Ben Coleman, Ken Green,
Ken Johnson, and Perry Young, all
fo rw a rd s . P o rte r is the o n ly guard
among the newcomers.
In the annual two-mile run, Darnell
Valentine finished first with a time o f
10 m inutes and 11 seconds, Joe
Atkinson was second and Steve Colter
third.
The Blazers should be a stronger
rebounding team this year w ith the
addition of 6-9 Coleman and 6-8 Ken
Johnson o f Michigan State. Coleman
and Johnson were acquired by th e i
Blazers in a trade w ith the Chicago
Bulls. Coleman was a second-round
draft pick o f the Bulls last season, but
opted to play in Ita ly when he
co u ld n't reach a contract agreement
with the Bulls.
When Coleman was asked to com
pare the P ro League in Ita ly to the
N B A , he replied, "th e re 's better
com pen ion in the N B A " Coleman
said he looked forw ard to playing in
the N B A W h ile at M a ry la n d ,

The T ra il Blazers w ill play eight
pre-season games. T h e ir firs t game
w ill be O ct. 5, against the Phoenix
Suns in Phoenix. The Blazers' firs t
pre-season game in Oregon w ill be
played on Oct. 10 against the Golden
State W arriors in M edford. OR. The
Blazers w ill play only two pre-season
games in the M e m o ria l C oliseum :
Oct. 12 against Phoenix and Oct. 19
against the I A Clippers.

life o f m ajor colleges in order to deal
with the pressure ol big time college
