Page 10, Portland Observer, April 10, 1985 Black business falling behind Although Block-owned businesses u e expanding in sales and profits, they are falling behind in the market place. in part because o f intense com petition for the Black consumer's dollar, according to D r. Andrew F. Bnmmer, a member of the Black En terprise magazine's Board of Econo OWN A HOME FOR LESS THAN mists. In 1977 (the last year for which Census Bureau data arc available), receipts o f Black-owned businesses were $6.6 billion, or 0.32 percent of all U S. sales. Brimmer, president of the Washington, D.C.-based consult ing firm o f Brimmer & Company, Inc., and a former member o f the Federal Reserve Board o f G ov ernors, estimates sales for I9M4 at $12.8 billion, but only 0.26 percent o f all U.S. sales And while he esti mates 1985 sales at $13.3 billion, that will represent a decline to 0.25 percent of U .S. sales, he explains in a feature stor in the April issue of Black Enterprise The decline in market share on the part o f Black-owned businesses ex tends to the Black community itself, says Brimmer. In 1969, the receipts o f Black businesses represented 13.5 per cent of the money income received by the Black community, but in 1984 that proportion dropped to 7 percent and is expected to drop to 6.6 percent this year. "A s the income o f black consum ers increases," states Brimmer, "their spending patterns have been concen trated on a widening pattern o f goods and services not supplied by Black firms. Blacks are also moving to the suburbs, while Black businesses re main primarily in the older neigh borhoods where most Blacks continue to live." Most o f the competition is com ing from the new influx o f minorities who have entered the marketplace in the past few years, particularly Ko reans and other Asians. Additional statistics on trends in Black self-employment are included in Brimmer's article in the April issue of Black Enterprise.
