Imam Najieb, exhibiting ihe en thusiasm it lakes for the completion o f such a collective effort, indicated "A l-lsla m in Focus" is prim arily meant to complement the existing radio broadcast o f "Im a m W Dean Muhammad Speaks,” heard each Sunday on K H (X ) community radio, Portland. The local chapter o f the American Muslim Mission has taken a big step toward eliminating the misunder standings surrounding the religion o f Ai-lslam with the use o f cable tele vision recently. On the evening o f March 20th, Resident Imam Muhammad Najieb, with members o f the American Mus lim Mission, Portland, began video taping "A l-ls la m in Focus," to be shown on Portland Cable Access tele vision in the near future. In an effort to acquaint the c iti zens o f Portland with the truth o f his faith, Imam Najieb lost little time in welcoming his viewers and acquaini- ing ihetn with Al Islam’s appeal for the development o f gtxxl, wholesome values, ethical behavior and, most importantly, rational thinking "There's a tremendous need for a better understanding o f Al-lslam in A m erica," Imam Najieb said “ Many o f us today still ding to the super stitions o f the past," he added. Imam Najieb placed a particular emphasis on the African-American conimunilies across America. Imam Najieb took a unique ap proach, on his first video-taped lec ture, to convey and illustrate his sub ject matter entitled “ The Resurrec tion o f the Dead." Imam Napeh offered a parable to give casual substance to his pro nouncements. "A lla h (<»4xJ) causes a cloud fully laden with water to rain down on a barren dead land and life springs forth, so shall it be with the resurrection o f the dead," said Imam Najieb. He went on to give examples and drew a parallel between the truth o f Al-Quran (muslim holy b<x>k) and man's earthly existence. The Festival is open to any film or videomaker from kindergar ten through college who resides in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, M on tana or Alaska. The Young People's Festival is an opportunity fo r young film and video artists to have their work viewed by a panel o f profession als and presented to the public. The panel o f judges selects winning works in five categories: K J, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12 and college/university. The 12th Annual Young People’s Film and Video Festival is coordinat ed by the Northeast Film Study Cent er and is co-sponsored by Oregon Public Broadcasting, the Washington Library Media Association, Oregon Educational Media Association, the Jefferson High School Television Department and the Portland Area Burger King Restaurants. Winning works from the Festival will be presented at a special screening at the Northwest Film Study Center on Saturday, May 18, 1985 at 2 p.m. and w ill be broadcast on public tele vision later in the year.
