( X A is a private, non governmental, n o t-fo r -p r o fit o rg a n iza tio n to strengthen ties among the people of A fric a , the U n ited Slates and the C a rib b e a n It seeks to stim u late among Americans a greater interest in the affairs of these regions of the world. Through ihe f ) ( A program last week came six men from T og o on the west coast of A fric a, a country nearly the size o f West V irg in ia T here are about Iff m a jo r ethnic groups in Tog o 's p op u latio n o f 3 million. Dominant groups are Ewe, 1 wi and Hausa It has been estima ted that 10% o f Togolese are M u s lim , 30% are C h ris tia n , and 6 0 % practice their tra d itio n a l religions. The six men who were Portland visitors are all educators and teachers in Lome, thecapitol city of I ogo. f rench, the official language o f T o g o , is heard most o fte n , alth o u g h the A fric a n languages, I we. M in a , D ago m b a, and Kabie are still in home use The visitors, all fluent in English, are involved in a comparatively new Togolese effo rt, they said, to emphasize English as a second language in their T og r schools Before arriving in this city the visitors had an intensive three week study of English in an Arizon college Bethel A M E. Church Missionary Society at a church picnic at Penin sula park. Some o f them saw soft ball played for the first time when Ernest H a rtzo g , assistant superin tendent of Portland Public Schools, set up games for the crowd attend ing the picnic. Transportation for the guests was p ro vided by the P o rtla n d U rb a n League as a co o perative c o n trib u tio n to the O C A program on behalf of the general community. O n their A m erican to u r, the A fric a n visitors were escorted by Isabelle Houlbreque The party left P o rtla n d to spend a week in New York City before returning to Togo. Paul W illia m s o f P o rtlan d C o m m u n ity ( ollegc and his w ile Barbara, who showed them places o f interest in the city, including a special tour of the Cascade campus of PCC. D r.
