About 250 friends of Jack and Jill were present. A " fa m ily o rie n te d " organi zation, founded in Philadelphia in 1938 by M a rio n Thom as, the group o f 20 mothers brought together then has grown to a fam ily membership o f over 30,000 with 155 chapters located through- cx t the country. The "P E P ” program (Parenting, Education and Political Involvement), reinforces members’ interest in the a rt o f parenting, supporting programs in the education of children and the full participatior in the political processes. In Portland’s anniversary event, Rosalyn Curry, daughter of the late Emma Lewis, founder o f the local chapter, was accorded the honor of introducing the several charter members and past presidents o f the local organization present at the a f fair. Twenty-four women made up the original charter group. Elaine Jamison, current president of the local chapter, James Walker acting as master of ceremonies, and Patricia W a lk e r, vice president, were in charge o f the afternoon’s diversified program which followed dinner. Pastels class offered Artist Lew Harris teaches a new course covering the uses o f chalk and oil pastels for Portland Com munity College spring term. Por traits in Pastels is a beginner's level class, according to Harris. Students will use both drawing and painting technique* to create a likeness. The class begins March 27th and runs Tuesday evenings at PCC's Stadium Center, 1736 S.W . Alder Hours are 6:30 to 8:30 p.m . and tuition is $22. H arris moved to P ortland last summer from Massachusetts, where he earned his Master o f Fine Arts degree at Southeastern Massachu setts U niversity. He has taught water color classes through PCC and currently teaches part time at Portland State University.
