February 23rd at 8:00 p .m ., in P SU ’ s Ballroom, O il Scott- Heron will showcase BCAB's con tribution to Black History M onth. Scott-Heron is a scholar, lecturer, recording artist, author and poet. Among his celebrated works are such classics as " T h e H20-gatc Blues,” " W e Beg Your Pardon. A m erica." and "Jose Campos T o r res,” the poetic response to the kill ing o f a Mexican-American by the Houston police. Scott-Heron's per- formance is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are S7 general admis sion and $6.50 for PSU students. Tickets arc available at the usual Nathaniel Scott Portland Slate University's Black Cultural Affairs Board's (B C A B ) Annual Gospel Festival. January 28th, will dictate the mood o f Black History M o nth , according to B C A B ’s chairperson. Ronnie W a lk er. Nationally known gospel singer Vanessa Bell Armstrong, the fea tured artist, will be joined by local gospel singer JoAnn Collins and the Greater M t. Calvary Church o f God In Christ and the Albina Church of God's Ministers O f Music Choirs, The event is scheduled lo t Satur day, January 28th. at 7:30 p .m ., in PSU's Ballroom (S M C . 3rd floor). Tickets are $4 general admission and S3.30 for PSU students. The Gospel Festival is co-sponsored by the M etropolitan Arts Commission. Black History M onth. February, will begin with the A frican-A m eri can Drama Company o f San Fran cisco's pres^Pation o f "C a n 1 Speak For You. Brother?” The per formance will be Wednesday, Feb ruary 1st at 8:00 p .m ., in PSU's Ballroom. Tickets are S2.5O general admission and S2 for PSU students. There will also be a free workshop on “ Physical.Posture and Politics." Scheduled for 3 p .m ., location has not been announced. O R — American pi anist Leon Bates will appear with the Oregon Symphony Orchestra under the baton o f James DcPreist in Portland on January 22, at 7:30 p .m ., and on January 23 & 24 at 8:00 p .m ., at the Civic Auditorium. The classical program will be repeat ed in Salem on January 25. at 8:13 p .m ., at the Smith Auditorium at W illamette University and in Eu gene on January 27 at 8:30 p.m . at the Silva Concert H all o f the H u ll Center for the Performing Arta. The concerts will begin with Charles Ives’ "Decoration Day” from the symphony, "H o lid ay s,” and con tinue with Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 43, which will feature M r. Bates. The program will conclude with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E flat. Op. 55, the "E roica” Sym phony. Leon Bates, a native of Philadel phia, makes his Oregon Symphony Orchestra debut with these concerts. One o f the leading pianists on the American music scene today. M r. Bates has been called "an elegant player with a keen ear for color, and a flair for poetry as persuasive as his bursts o f fiery extroversion,” by the New York Times.
