Benchmark project wins award The Benchmark Hotel in down town Memphis, Tennessee, has re ceived the Most Outstanding Renovation Award in national com petition. The Benchmark was select ed from among 1200 construction projects in the United States. W in ners in other categories included the U S. Pavilion at the Worlds Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee, and the C hi cago Zoo. The $4.6 million hotel, located only 2 blocks from world renowned Beale Street in Memphis, will cele brate its National Grand Opening Nov. 17th to mark the official com pletion of the 120-room facility. The Benchmark Hotel was developed by New Memphis Development Corp., a minority economic development corporation headquartered in Memphis. The firm was founded by Memphis business leader Frank Banks in 1976. Mabra Holeyfield, president of N M D C , said. " W e ’re very proud to be presented with this presitgious award. The Benchmark Hotel is a project N M D C has spent three years working on and when it opens on Nov. 17th it will be the most modern and luxurious minority owned hotel facility in the U .S ." Thai visits refugee program The Southeast Asian Refugee Federation and its officers were greatly honored recently be a visit from Ah Ram Kotikula of Thai land, who was returning home from a trade mission in Canada. M r. Ko tikula holds the position as Execu tive Director of (he Association of Thai Industries and also functions as the Secretary General of the As sociation of S.E. Asian Nations (A S EA N ) Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The special visit was arranged by Tom Sherrett, a new staff member of SEARF's fast growing Economic Development Project. Mr. Sherrett is a former employee of Mr. Kotiku- la’s having served as an outside con sultant to the Association of Thai Industry. SEARF's staff in conjunction with some members of the SEARF Board of Directors held a meeting with M r. Kotikula, lo give him an idea of the objectives, personnel, history, and the various component parts that make up SEARF's pro grams. He expressed extreme sur prise at the way SEARF's multi-eth nic staff is able to work in close har mony. He viewed the multi-ethnic make-up of SEARF’s personnel as somewhat of a parallel to Southeast Asian people working together in ASEAN, the regional based organi zation he is a part of. On looking at the Economic De velopment program, M r. Kotikula urged SEARF to increase contacts with the U.S. Chamber of Com- merce offices in Washington D .C ., and said he would write a note io the President of that organization in or der to make him aware of the work that is going on here in Oregon on behalf of refugee resettlement ef forts. Other comments on SEARF's programs reflected Mr. Ah Ram's ideas that a services provider from Ihe U.S. might develop and imple ment some orientation and familiar ization programs that mighi be im plemented in Thailand and around the other countries in Soulheasi Asia where these temporary camps exist. These programs could be directed towards those refugees who are ear marked to come to the U.S. in the near future. SEARF, in fact, has re cently developed Audio Visual Training Packages for refugee pop ulations in the areas of Health Care and Food Sanitation under the di rection of the Family Outreach Pro gram and Khanthaly Thammavong. Kotikula met with Dr. Pradith Chourarath's Laotian Organization and discussed with (hem the events in Asia and the prospects for the fu ture of these displaced citizens and their homeland. The natural friend ship of Thai citizens and Lao people emerged as the evening progressed and mutual support and friendship were pledged M r.
