T he pro gram is designed as a tw o- year experim ent in which no more than $20 m illio n in bonds w ill be issued. U ltim a te ly , though, the participants, and not the state, are responsible for bond repaym ent. UC extended benefits end T h e extended benefits u nem p loy ment insurance program w ill te rm i nate in O regon w ith claims fo r the week ending July 2, 1983, according to an announcem ent made today by the O regon E m plo ym en t Division. Federal law provides fo r this 13 week extension during periods o f high unem ploym ent. Because o f O regon's im p ro ving econom y the insured unem ploym ent rate has fa ll en below the federally m andated level necessary to continue paying Extended Benefits to O regon resi dents. Ray T h o rn e, A d m in is tra to r, stat ed, " A p p ro x im a te ly 14,000 in d iv id uals currently collecting Extended Benefits w ill be switched a u to m a ti cally to a Federal Supplem ent C o m pensation program . H o w ever, other federal legislation reduces this p ro gram fro m 14 weeks to 12 weeks this week a ls o ." It is not anticipated that O regon w ill be back on the I B program in the foreseeable future. This is due to the com bined effect o f O regon's im proving jo b m arket and com plex federal legislation that altered the criteria required fo r a state to pay these benefits. T ho rn e noted that this leaves un em ployed O regonians w ith an initial 26 weeks o f benefits paid by the state and ihe 12 weeks o f t -derally financed benefits.
