week ending July 2, 1983, according
to an announcem ent made today by
the O regon E m plo ym en t Division.
Federal law provides fo r this 13
week extension during periods o f
high unem ploym ent. Because o f
O regon's im p ro ving econom y the
insured unem ploym ent rate has fa ll
en below the federally m andated
level necessary to continue paying
Extended Benefits to O regon resi
dents.

It is not anticipated that O regon
w ill be back on the I B program in
the foreseeable future. This is due to
the com bined effect o f O regon's im
proving jo b m arket and com plex
federal legislation that altered the
criteria required fo r a state to pay
these benefits.
T ho rn e noted that this leaves un
em ployed O regonians w ith an initial
26 weeks o f benefits paid by the
state and ihe 12 weeks o f t -derally
financed benefits. H e staled, " T h e
federal benefits are scheduled to
sunset in Septem ber unless Congress
extends th e m .”
