Page fl Portland Observer, January 12,1983 Cowboys Are Girls When the W orld ’ s Toughest Rodeo appears at M em orial Coliseum, Jan uary 21 thru January 23, most o f the rodeo spectators will be expecting only to witness the competitive competition o f pro rodeo athletes in seven world championship events. The rodeo producer, Steve Gander, has arranged a special treat for the Portland fans. The featured attraction is a talented group known as the Ria ta Ranch Cowboys. There is no group like the Riata Ranch Cowboys anywhere in the world. In the past six years they have performed in eleven countries, twentv-eiaht American states. and four television specials. Their amazing show includes acrobatic horse riding, trick roping, and musical performances. One thing that makes them really unique is that these cowboys are actually beautiful young ladies. C’s WIGS The World's Toughest Rodeo, w ith all Its snortin', buckin'. Wild West action and color, combines show-biz extravaganza and big money athletic competition at Memorial Coliseum. January 21-23. “ We always spend a great deal o f time scouting the country for fresh and different specialty entertainers so we can bring our audiences something bright and new every year," said M r. Gander. “ The Riata Ranch Cowboys were such a success in New York and other cities we’ve asked them back for their second to u r.” This marks the first time M r. Gander has renewed an act for the second year. The two-and-a-half hours is more than pageantry and production. In ad dition to the special attractions, rodeo fans w ill witness a m ajo r sporting event that is chock full o f the P R C A ’s best rodeo athletes and most recog nized cowboys in the sport today. The animals spectators will sec making misery for the cowboys will repre sent three o f the sport’ s top rated herds from C alifornia, Washington, and Oregon. The animals themselves are athletes and many o f them, like ,982 Bareback Horse o f the Year, Smith & Velvet, are better known w ithin the sport than some o f the cowboys. Betty Cabin». Gospel Singing Lady 4 Tramaine Hawkins, wife o f one of Am erica’s foremost gospel singers and composers, W alter H aw kins, really doesn’ t remember a tim e when she wasn’t singing. She started singing when she was four years old in her G ran d fath er's church in Berkeley, C alifo rn ia. By the time she was seven, she joined her first singing group, “ The Heavenly Tones" and sang with the group until she was IS in 1966. She also recorded her first album with the group, “ I Love The L o rd ," on the Savoy label. The group traveled extensively and as they improved they received an o f fer from Sly Stone to turn to popular music. " , knew this wasn't for me,” she said, as the resl o f the grop went on to become Sly Stone's “ Little Sis ters. " She met and joined W alter H aw kins* first group "P raisers o f G o d " when whe was 16 in 1967 and at the same time organized a group called the “ Progressive Three” with W alter’s sister, Lynette, and Gail Smith, appear ing before numerous churches. Tram aine then joined Ihe Northern C alifornia State C h o ir, the forerun ner o f the Edw in H a w k in s Singers. The big 68-m em ber ch o ir was also known as the “ Oh Happy Day C h o ir" and was featured on Edwin Hawkins now famous record. She was also featured in the trio on the album for " I Heard The Voice.” She then joined Andrae Crouch and Ihe Disciples when she was 18 and for the next ten months sang with the group and recorded the Crouch album “ Keep On Singing" on Light Records. She rejoined the Edwin Hawkins Singers for a tour o f Europe in 1971 and appeared on their return w ith the group at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, where she became engaged lo W a lte r H a w k in s . They were m arried in March, 197,. She continued her w ork w ith the Edwin Haw kins Singers until W alter Hawkins organized his Love Center Church in Oakland in 1973 and began performances with the "L o v e Center C h o ir." W ith the " C h o ir" she record ed three albums, including "L ove A live,” “ Jesus Christ Is the W a y ," and "Love Alive I I , " on Light Records. Tram aine’s first sol oalbum for Light Records, "T ra m a in e .” which was released in 1980, was nominated for a Grammy and sold over 100,000 cop ies in its first 70 days on the market. Tram aine and her husband, W alter, both won Grammys in 1981 for their participation in “ The Lord's P rayer," an album featuring some o f the nation's top gospel artists. She is currently featured on "T he Hawkins F am ily." After hundreds o f performances and concerts as a member o f the choir or featured vocalist for W alter or Edwin Hawkins as well as Andrae Crouch, Tramiane is now making concert appearances on her own, while continuing her appearances with W alter Hawkins and the Family. " I ’ve always been singing," she says. " I t ’s a ministry. The Lord has be come the spotlight o f my life.
