I ’ m meeting lots o f new people and learning lots o f new things. In this assignment I solicit cooperation and funds fro m sm all businesses and professional o rg an iza tio n s. I am meeting real estate people, a tto r neys, accountants, learn ing how they run their businesses, also how ra d io stations and construction companies run theirs. These people have been wonderful. Haynes’ new pace has not slack ened the “ old” one. She is still pres ident o f the P o rtla n d A lu m n ae Chapter o f Delta Sigma Theta who recently entertained 400 members o f the P o rtla n d c o m m u n ity at their first annual Pepperm int dance. “ I don't take credit for the success o f that a f f a i r , ” said H ayn es. “ G a il W ashington was chairperson fo r that. It was a fun evening. Most of our guests wore some com bination o f red and w h ite — even the men wore white trousers and red jackets. W e members wore corsages spiked w ith pepperm int candies and we gave peppermint candy from a big horn-of-plenty.” When Haynes is not presiding at chapter meetings fo r D e lta s , she may be acting as treasurer fo r the Portland Chapter o f Links, Inc. She is also on the executive board at the C enter fo r C o m m u n ity M e n ta l Health.
